Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • Okay, funny people, crisis averted!

And, yes, he DID look funny, so I can't blame you for snickering…I'd'a done the same! No, I did not get a picture, I was in complete panic mode! Truly!

I was so worried about him licking the paint off (which he tried to do after wiping himself off on the grass...much to the hysterical amusement of our painter...now fired (just kiddin'!)) and poisoning himself, my only concern was get it off, Get It Off, GET IT OFF!!

Anyways, although it's a good suggestion for removing oil-based paint, I didn't try the peanut butter because it's one of Mag's favorite treats, and I didn't think a paint/peanut butter mixture would "sit well."

So, I used a dish soap with a degreasing agent, namely, Dawn. Worked a charm, pretty much. He got three baths in a row (hose baths, COLD water), so you can imagine that Magnum was NOT a happy camper, but we got most of the paint off, especially from the places he could lick. I just kept telling him, in my best, comforting Mommy voice, "Stop wiggling! You brought it on yourself, NoseyBoy!" 'Course I wasn't gonna admit to him that I knew it was MY fault! Shhh! Don't tell him!

BTW, the paint was a lovely brownish-reddish-gray, which didn't go so spectacularly with his beautiful chestnut red and white.

Here's a pic of what's left around his eye, which was coated in paint:

After doing about 7 million b-500's, he's finally settled down. Doesn't much like that Moms is checking him every few minutes… Thanks for all the suggestions!

  • Glad that he is OK… and sorry for laughing... but you have to admit.... it is pretty amusing!!!!

  • It is. Now that the crisis is over, and I'm pretty sure he's gonna be okay (I'm not sure how much of the paint he actually ingested), I'm chuckling to myself over both his behavior…and mine!

  • At least he isn't green! Glad it all came off OK.

  • Would have been pretty funny if the paint was purple or bright green..gggg

  • What a trooper!!! At least he isn't pink :)

  • Pink basenji! funny…
    Glad he is ok.

  • Poor Magnum - Bet he learned his lesson and will steer clear of those particular paint smells now that he knows what the consequence will be. All I can think of is what a mess you dealt with. Poor you, gbroxon.

    Hmm…. I would "bet not".....gggg;)

  • I am glad your dog is ok, funny as it must have been! I would have been paranoid about it being digested too, cause knowing Tosca she would have considered it to be a yummy snack!

And you'd win! This morning, Magnum followed me down to the laundry room where I had put some painted-up towels I used last night to get off a lot of the paint when it first happened. Luckily, I was able to grab them up just as he got into position to throw himself down and roll on them. (I trashed them after getting them as clean as I could.) He just loves rolling in stuff that's smelly, whether it's a good smell or a bad smell! He may have learned a lesson, but it's obviously not one that's gonna stop him from rolling in smelly stuff!

He seems to be okay even after getting several licks of paint in, no tummy problems, his usual laid-back self. Eating and drinking well.

One thing you can do to help his coat is to bathe him every 1-2 weeks with Murphy's Oil Soap. Use your fingers and gently "scrub" him while he is soaped up. (Murphy's does not produce much lather so don't expect it.) The massaging will loosen dead hair and help it fall out. This stimulates new hair to grow. Murphy's has natural oils including coconut that help moisten the skin and keep it healthy.

Phoenix has had a rash like that before i went to the vet I figured a yeast infection is a yeast infection right weather in people or pets so i went and bought some "womans yeast infection meds" those bullet shaped things and just took it out of the wrapper and just rubbed it on his tummy alittle i rubbed it in and made sure he didnt lick at it the next morning the rash was just about gone went to the vet and she said that's what he had and to acaully just use what i did for a day or so and it should be gone it was a surface yeast infection and so as long as i just rubbed that stuff on like it was lotion he would be fine i applaied it 2 more times and it was gone he gets them from time to time and thats all i do it's a alot cheaper in the long run the stuff she said she was going to give me was going to cost me $67. plus the cost of the vet so i figured now i will just save the moeny and go spend 8 :) i would think there might be a problem using that if u have a dog that likes to try and lick it but phoenix could care less he just enjoyed his belly rub while i was rubbing it in :)
