I need a puppy sitter…..

Basenji Talk
  • I'm going away for a destination wedding from November 12th thru the 17th. I need someone with a Basenji and the knowledge of a Basenji to take care of my pup while I'm gone. I'm just not feeling the love of a professional pet sitter or boarding him at a "doggie hotel." Any suggestions or takers?

    Thanks,
    Mick's Mom, Val
Abington, PA 5 miles from Philly

  • Val,

Although I will have school during that time, I would be willing to pet sit for another basenji. I have been considering getting a friend for my basenji once he gets past his teenager period so experience sitting for another one would be helpful. The only thing would be that I would need to pet sit for your guy in my home and I live in New Bedford Mass which is probably about 5 hours from you. If you'd be willing to meet halfway (and if your guy travels well), then maybe I could help out.

I am a bit far away and me pet sitting for Mick might be more of a pain getting him here than a help for you. If you can't however find anyone closer, then let me know. shoconnor@hotmail.com

  • Pet sitters at home are good…but we have a place where dogs have like a kennel, doggie day care type of place, and its a great area to have your put learn about other dogs, other people and help him get socialized.
I don't know if you have something like that, but check around your areas, they are bonded, have secure areas for the dogs to play and run, etc...

  • Shannon~Thank you so much for the offer. You are an amazing and caring person for even offering. It means so much to me and my family. Without any hesitation you would drive half way and meet me. This alone is an amazing act. I will never forget your kindness.
My husband's cousin has offered to take our B and he has another dog which would help.
I knew I could count on this forum for help. I feel a special bond with all the members and I truly enjoy reading all your stories and sharing in your day to day experiences with our furbabies.
Shannon~Thanks for your advice! I appreciate all your knowledge and experience.

Hey no problem. Glad you could find someone you know and who is closer. That will definitely work out better for you. Have a great trip.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experience! Saturday Feb. 14th 2015, we brought home an 8 weeks old puppy: Pix. Alf who is 2 years old was really great at introducing himself to the puppy. 4 days later, he litteraly is educating Pix, teaching him good manners and snipping him gently from time to time. I wasn't sure if all the noise was normal, but I for sure know that Alf never really hurts the puppy. He never had any troubles with any dogs, and I think Pix is probably a really good actor :)

@myran: Thh only thing you have to keep in mind that girls go into heat which can be a hassle whining male having to guard and often separate them during the critical period. I have several basenji friends that have 2 even 5 boy´s and it works as they are of different ages puppies are integrated in to the pack when they are less then 12 weeks. But it takes a strong leader males rarely fight to kill more to show who´s the leader and when the other gives up they calm down not so with females they can be really nasty. Are you going to show them and maybe in the future breed then yes a girl but if not i´d choose a boy as it´s cheaper to neuter a boy then sterilize a girl.Especially as you have to let her have one heat before surgery maybe it´s different over there. And as I said before you can have boy´s together that aren´t neutered. But as they´ve mentioned before go with your breeders recommendations. Good Luck,Michelle In the US, price is usually the same for a spay as it is for a neuter…. and usually people opt to spay before the first season in the US.

@dash: Thanks! We went right after X-mas. We ended up using someone from Craigslist. She was wonderful. I actually have 1 Basenji, 1 Beagle and currently 2 foster Basenjis. So it is a house full. Oh!!! I didn't see the date on your initial e-mail!!! A bit slow, I suppose….;). Oh well - for future reference.....:)

@Mantis: These will not cause diahreah in puppies….greenies will make the poop a bit softer than usual and green :) greenies have been known to cause blockage, and even death. just one of many links to read about it…. http://www.optimumchoices.com/Greenies.htm
