It’s great that you’re doing your homework on the basenji. I think the reason you read all these “horror stories” is because they are not your typical dog. They are a beautiful and highly intelligent breed with a very strong prey drive. My Kembe is my first basenji but I was familiar with the breed because my brothers were basenji owners. I got her when she was 1years old - she was returned to the breeder by the previous owners. Kembe has never been destructive, she has free reign of our house, and I can leave her at home alone. It’s extremely important to exercise them regularly - especially exercise and stimulate their minds, and establish a routine (I can set my watch to my dog). They are definitely trainable - it scares me to see how smart she is and also well behaved. Basenjis are extremely lovable and hilariously funny. If I have a treat that my dog especially likes - she will do her whole “repertoire of tricks” without me even asking her. She dances to let me know it’s time to eat and will sit right next to me and hit me with her paw when she wants to go for her walk.
I think our basenji chose us - when we went to the breeders home to look at her - She jumped up next to my husband on the couch and curled up! I was sold on her! I really hope you find a basenji that right for you!

We were at Starbucks and saw this lady doing a pet portrait in the corner, so we comissioned a drawing of our dogs. She came out met the dogs, shot a roll of film them and did this- She called it "the whisper"
Found this in a google image search- not sure where it's from or who did it.
Anyone else have some basenji art to post?

This is B-E-A-U-tiful! You don't happen to have the lady's name, number, website, do you?

I can check if my wife still has it & PM you. She spent about an hour meeting the dogs. She said she likes to get to know the dogs first. The dogs loved her. She shot a roll of high speed film of them, with some really great shots. sitting on the ground taking pictures of them. she's an older woman who was head of the county art league here. She's very good. I don't think she has a web site as she does it mostly for fun, she loves animals.
The Whisper was the two dogs standing on a rock over looking the pond
See the large rock under the clump of grass?
that is where the picture was taken from. They were both standing together on that rock. He looked like he was gentley telling her a secret. She probably just had dirty ears!

Great drawing. A few years ago I wanted to find someone to do a portrait of my husband's elder B/W basenji. It was awhile before I found someone to do it and also was reasonably priced. It was done in pen and ink, since oreo was black and white it was perfect. It was truly a exact image of him done by seeing pictures of him. It was a wonderful christmas gift for my husband. although his daughter laughs that Oreo's picture is bigger than the one he had drawn of her when she was a child. Oreo has now passed on and when I had this done I had no idea how much comfort it would provide years later. It still brings a smile and fond memories of his special buddy every time he looks at it.

These are all great!

Not the best picture, but this statue is pretty cool and I just had to have it.This is some of my personal art work:rolleyes:
Andrea may remember this one.:D
I wanted Andrea(Quercus) to post a picture of her Af pup. Well it was taking longer than I was willing to wait. I sent Andrea a note and told her I was going to post this picture on the forum and tell everyone that this might be what Andrea's pup looks like.:D
Andrea had a giggle and told me my art wasn't bad…...so here ya go!:D -
Love the statue…the stick figure is quite nice - I myself am a MagnaDoodle "arteeest"....LOL!
Seriously though...great work! -
That Casting is amazing!
I would of bought that in a heart beat as well. I have been to a lot of African Art dealers/stores and they never have basenji's or even Cape Hunting Dogs.
