Basenji Talk
  • Hi! This is my first post and I must say this is an interesting web site. I have a red & white female(Sonia) Basenji who is almost 14 years old. She is a doll and we love her dearly. It's hard to see her get old and not quite as active. She is also pretty deaf, which is hard for all of us. We use hand signals for her when we can get her attention, but she often doesn't hear us to know to look. The Vet says there is nothing "wrong" that it is just a part of getting old.

Does anyone every tried Glucosamine for Basenji arthritis symptoms? Has it helped and what is the dosage that you have given. Sonia weighs about 22 pounds. She has been having trouble going up the stairs and jumping onto the bed when it's time to go nitey night.

Well, I have to go nitey night, too, so I'll sign off. Hopefully I'll get some replies.

  • Hi and welcome…and hugs to your little old girl! We use a supplement that has glucosamine for our dogs...but I have never used it straight, so I don't know what dosage would be appropriate. But I bet you could find the info online, or from your vet. It does seem to help with elderly and/or arthritic dogs.

  • Welcome Jody. getting old stinks–poor girl. At least she has a loving family to be with.

  • Welcome and I can appreciate "it stinks to get old", my oldest will be 16 in August and September! Mine are both mostly deaf… and I have used Move free (yes the people version) on my Basenjis, 1/2 a pill a day..

  • Welcome to the forum…my B girl is 11 yr and she limps for about 30-45 seconds after she gets up from laying for a little while...getting old does stink..I have yet to use any thing to help her but after this thread I am going to talk to Jojo's vet...a loving family is a blessing!!

  • Welcome lot's of good info on here! Enjoy!

  • Hi Jody,
I had a 14-1/2 year old red/wht which I very sadly last Thursday had to put to sleep because of a large tumor. He also had very bad hearing. Fish oil has esential fatty acids which will help with any joint pain. It contains EPA/DHA. Get Spectrum Naturals if you want the capsule and puncture and squirt on food or give Carlson's COD Liver oil. You get these at the health food store. Use the glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM combination.

  • Welcome, this is a fun forum to learn and share! It sounds like your girl is getting great care…post pictures when you can!

  • Thanks for your replies. I've started giving Sonia Glucosamine w/ MSM every day and we'll see how she does. I'll give you an update in about a month and let you know if it's helped or not.

Well, I went to the dog park again. It was actually kinda boring. Only one other guy there with 2 little, shaved white dogs. He was not talkative at all and after the initial sniff, the dogs pretty much ignored on another. It was kinda hot (90 degrees) + humid + around dinner time so I wasn't really surprised. I was gonna leave when I, with the sun in my eyes, saw someone showing up with a dog with a curly tail and pointy ears. I thought, "OMG, is that a basenji, can't leave now." Turns out it was a Shiba-Inu. Cute dog. I thought, "Hey, maybe we'll get something here, playwise." No such luck, again, ignoring after the initial sniff. Oh well, it still made a tired basenji, which is good. I will go back again. Oh, and DolceMomma, this park also separates small and large. But the "large" dog area is so-o much nicer than the small dog area. First time, we started in the "small" dog area, alone, five minutes, went into the "large" dog area, 'cause that's where everyone else was. I just think this is a good way for my boy to get socialized. But I am/will be vigilant.

@Gabriel: I have a small travel type crate that I put Noel in while we are away from home and at night. she is 14 weeks. She is really getting to big for this. What types of crates do you keep your B's in? I am looking at a medium size cage type kennel. 30L x 19W x 21H inches I want to be sure she has plenty of room to lay down in it. What is your advice? i got a crate big enough 4 a large dog. like a lab or something simular. I had 2 get the travel crate because in a wire crate she would pull things into the crate and eat it. comforters rugs you name it. She even ate her bed. fluff everywhere.

@Duke: LOL - Me neither! I have heard for years that Vermont is one of the best "must see" Fall color tour places. So, nala121498 . . . If not at your beautiful abode, somewhere that could accomodate many Basenji and their people?? :) Trip of lifetime for me anyway. I just loved the wonderful pics that BBoy posted. You are so gratious and kind to share the pics! Of course - we love pictures. Did I say pictures? :D Yes! Thanks! I'd love to have it here (DH, maybe not! I could send him on a trip for a few days - LOL!)! Anytime you'd like to plan a trip here, just let me know. :)

I think an original idea should be developed that is associated with bs. The weims dressed up is so classic for them. Bs should somehow be associated with messes. Maybe they should be paired with new furniture advertising or TP sales!!! Weims became so popular tho, they are having probs in rescue. They are very high energy and most people can't give them enough exercise. I think my idea would prevent Bs from becoming too popular and lots more ending up in rescue. :D
