Yep, we bath them when they're dirty.

  • :D :D :D :D :D Dirty dogs!
Willy and Jasper where away at a show, the girls decided on a dust bath and a nap.:D :D :D :D

  • LOL…. Mine love to lay in the dirt... I have a huge yard with "nice" grass... and they choose to lay in the dirt!...

  • So that's what ya did on vacation?!

  • @srjeeper:

So that's what ya did on vacation?!

I planted stuff, did yard work, they just got dirty and slept. They enjoyed being out in the sun it was a great weather week. Had our first rabbit kill of the year.

  • We've been calling Nala "Mud Girl" for the past two weeks…who said they were clean??? LOL!

These guys certainly have nicer spots to lay than that and they do the same. If it isn't mud, it's dusty dirt. They'd plop down somewhere and a little dust cloud would come up…... :D

  • We had to give baths this week too but it was the goose poop that was so nauseatingly inviting that both "ruffians" had to roll in it and were so proud. They smelled so disgusting:eek:

  • Basenji Boy your babies are just beautiful! Even dirty. ;)

  • :D Penny and Raven both look as proud as peacocks of themselves! Storm is SO jealous that they managed to get a rabbit! He was hot on the trail of one tonight - thought for sure it was a goner, but it ducked into a burrow and left Storm whining and digging in the dirt trying to paw it out :) Of course, the rabbit didn't comply  , but you try telling a basenji to give up! :D Finally I did lure him away with a tasty homemade beef jerky treat. I guess his motto is "a treat in the hand (and belly!) is worth 2 rabbits in the bush!" ;)

Max actually opened the sliding glass door…..oh around 1am or so and went out. My Son said he thought he was out there an awfully long time and went out to see what he was up to. Max was digging under a little deck we have our grille on and pulled out a rabbit......he didn't eat it and gave it right to Lee, dead of course:( . Penny and Cleo would've eaten it for sure.....good luck getting it off of them.

  • I'm sorry…I just have to say this..."EEEEW" (LOL)!

  • Aw…dirty little dogs :)

I spent part of my Sunday mulching the "racetrack" the dogs have made in the back corner of the yard. I was tired of having mudders trying to come in and lounge on the furniture (I do have some house pride!) I actually had to hose them off one day, because they were so muddy I couldn't get them into the house without getting mudded myself, and we were on our way out of the house. Talk about unhappy Basenjis! I think my neighbors were concerned that I was beating the dogs judging by the screams.

So anyhow, I mulched the entire path, over the hill, around the woodpile, behind the pines, along the fence......so far...clean feet!

That's kind of how I do it too. They run and cause little trails, holes where they go around something…....very much like a race track. Mulch and stone are my basic materials!

What we do for these critters.

  • I even noticed that Nala has "carved" out her own little trail of mud - she races the cars as they drive up the road. That's where she's getting muddy (there is still some run-off from melting snow). Maybe little tiny paver stones…hee hee

If you leave things in their reach (any puppy/young dog) will get into trouble.... pick things up.... put them away, they do not know the difference between their toys/chews and things like remotes/glasses/etc... they have your scent on them. You have to work on crate training if you can't secure a place for them.

    Shaye's MomS
@Kananga: He manages to keep them short on his own. Probably due to how stubborn he is on walks at times (really digs into the asphalt/concrete). . My girl Shaye is the same - - she's now 3, and I'm trying the Gentle Leader. Her "sister" Gemma is settling into it quite nicely, not pulling any more - Shaye still throws herself on the ground, digs her face into the dirt, lays down and won't get up - won't pee or poo on walks - obviously it's going to take longer for her to decide to just cooperate with it. She will or she won't, I can't have her digging and pulling constantly, my hands are nearly useless from it.

The rain stopped thier foray, last week I counted 23 frogs doing laps in the pond while I was in the hot tub next to it. They hide well during the day and come out to swim at night. I added tiny goldfish last night to take down the tadpole population. When I put in larger goldfish a few yrs ago the possums and owls started snacking on them.

I admire the ability of other breeds that can stay off leash and close to their owners in a normal setting. I suppose the traits I love about my basenjis would be gone if they had the ability to not be interested in moving things.:) I know I am not supposed to say this, but I do enjoy seeing my basenjis fly through the air over furniture like little mountain goats. It is pretty amazing to see them indy 500 through a room.
