Collars made for Basenjis

Basenji Talk
  • Nick (who makes them) will send it to you with a bill so you can make sure you like it. I have had mine done in the Taj Mahal ribbon (in the pics) and almost every color over the years. My basenjis are indoor only and that ribbon is sensitive and may fray if your b is outdoor. The other fabrics are much more durable.

The fake fur ones are super cute!!

  • We use brass ID tags that bolt right to the collar, rather than hang, because I *don't like the idea of them getting the tags caught in teeth and mouths while playing.

where did you find the tags that bolt right on the collar?? Unfortunately we've had to change their tags since they like chew each others  and there's teeth marks on them.

  • Mantis-whats the difference between the Martingale & the Safety Choke??

i think I googled pet tags, or something like that, and found them at an online order place :)

The Martingale looks like a loop, that has a smaller loop at the top where the leash connects. So the big loop goes over the dog's head, and then the leash attaches to the small loop which pulls the ends of the big loop together to tighten or loosen. It looks a figure eight when you view it straight on.

The safefy choke, also called a limited slip collar, looks like a sideways P when viewed straight on. I prefer the limited slip, because it is harder for dogs to get their jaws caught up in each other's collars when playing. It also lays much more flat when on the dog.

  • I agree….

I bought a generic martingale from Petsmart and it just hangs sloppy. Call me crazy, but I think the safety choke looks smart and I get people asking me about them all of the time.

Nick also has real brass hardware if you want that gold look that won't rub off.

I just cant express how great this collar is. You can pick out any ribbon and customize it for the same price of a regular collar that is so bland at a petstore.

  • Has anyone ever heard of one dog chewing another dog's collar off? I was telling my friend about my recent fabulous collar purchases from Bella Bean and she said she wished she could get some for her dogs but that one of them chews it off the other dog's neck! What the heck! (She has a Heinz57 and a Coon Hound) I just thought that was really weird!!

  • That's one of the reason I never leave collars on at home, leather collar where their favorite :D

  • Yes, one ours is a master collar chewer. She usually chews her own collar, so she often wears a different kind of collar aound the house. Luckily she only tried to chew another dog's collar once, and the other dog didn't like it…but the collar still has a little chew mark.

You can always soak the collars in bitter apple, and that should eliminate any chewing.

  • Yes, I have heard of dogs chewing other dogs collars off. I don't leave collars on mine because I have had them chewed. I have had to use the replacement garuntee on my All Hounds collar because Rio chewed it.

  • Beta chewed Caesar's collar off when we first adopted her. I guess she didnt like the color.

She ate her own collar (a safety choke) one day when I was at work. Tags and all! She passed it like a trooper. She also ate off of herself two different harnesses when I first adopted her. She had a nervous tendency due to her rescue background that took a lot of finessing. I learned that her safety choke made tighter so it didnt hang so loose worked best for her. She never pulled on her leash.

  • Ivoss-Do you use the Martingale Collars or Martingale Leash from All Hounds?? I like that they all are lined with fleece.

  • This guy can line the collars like he adds the ribbon. Caesar's collar which is a 3inch wide collar is lined with a satiny material.

  • I have martingale collars from them and my mom has their regular collars and I know a lot of people who have the limited choke type collars from them. Next time I need a slip lead for lure coursing I will be getting it from them also. They have great customer service and I have been very pleased with their collars.

  • Chance keeps scratching his collar. Ever since I put it on him he just won't stop scratching.

  • He will get used to it. They all scratch like crazy the first time they wear a collar :)

The only thing I'd suggest is that you keep an eye on the skin of his neck. Max scratched and scratched with his first collar, and he ended up developing a hot spot. It was almost the size of a quarter before I even noticed it! His vet treated it (I forget whether he got an injection or we used cream or something). It healed up, he got used to the collar, and he stopped scratching.

  • My neighbor, who breeds English cocker spaniels, is friends with a lady who breeds basenjis. I met the basenji breeder once when she was visiting. She told me about the "hound collar". I got Senji one at PetSmart, and it really helps. Senji always wants to to pull, especially if he sees a squirrel or a rabbit. The collar keeps him from choking.

  • GREAT info, for PULLING issues on the leash i HIGHLY recomend Gentle Leaders!!! work great!!

  • I was going crazy and have some pics of the safety choke collars that I am such a fan of!!! I just received 2 puppy safety chokes and now Cairo at 11 weeks can fit into them!!

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

martingales- only thing I can use that my boy wont slip out of…that, and if you are used to a choke, this is considered a choke with safety. I am not a fan of collars on all the time due to possible strangulation (i crate my boy)....so I feel the need to put a disclaimer that a martingale does have a "loop on the collar that may catch on something

@Thana: she does have basenji characteristics then apart from her colours and looks.- i also think she must have some basenji blood! She is lovely and lucky no matter what! adorable little face:))))) Having read about the characteristics I think she does. The lady with the basenji that we met also commented on some of the things she was doing as "very basenji" (eg. standing on her back legs so she could see what was going on). Has a lovely wrinkly forehead too. Got very frustrated with me earlier and did her funny bark, more of a wierd howl really. She is def one of a kind. Its a shame we have to have her spayed (not that I could ever justify letting her have a litter).

I would defintely recommend martingale collars, specifically the Lupine brand ones..they are fairly inexpensive and have a 100% guarantee, meaning if your dogs eats/chews or in any way breaks it they will replace, no questions asked..we have used that policy once, when Otis decided to eat his….. As far as food..I have used Blue Buffalo, and like it lots, especially since it is easier to find. I also like EVO, Canidae and The Honest Kitchen..My dogs are on RAW so we use the Honest Kitchen or Sojos for mix ins, even when they were puppies. Good luck and how exciting..did you mention where you got her? A lot of our dogs are related so it is always fun to know.

@phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.
