@jengosmonkey
LOL this is a really important convo to be having! I'm honored that it takes place on my thread 😆 and yes, I absolutely agree with the points y'all are making.
People do need to know where their pups are coming from and whether they were responsibly bred. To think of it coldly, I wouldn't buy a house without looking into its history and possible problems, or I might face ridiculous stress, expense, and emotional trauma from subsequent issues that come up later. As a consumer, one should do their homework not only on the breed but on the breeder.
A breeder who produces puppies carelessly is basically a horrible human being in my book. It was a huge, thoroughly thought out moral decision for me not to adopt but to buy a purebred puppy, as I've worked with rescues before. I took this step with the possible goal of being a custodian. If a breeder is irresponsible in all the aforementioned ways, not only are they producing dogs with a higher possibility of suffering, muddying this ancient breed, and swindling people, they are needlessly taking potential homes away from dogs that need one AND frequently causing dogs to be abandoned! If there weren't any PMs or BYBs, imagine how many people would get schooled by rescue folk and responsible breeders into taking dog-parenting seriously before they ever took one home!
Sorry for the rant; I COMPLETELY understand the internal screaming that happens within some of you when you find out a pup is from a mill or crap breeder. If people like you and I keep yelling about it, we will change a few minds, which make all the difference to a few dogs which is better than no dogs 🙂
Hello from South London, UK!
-
Hello from next door in Kent (Rochester). We have an 8 month old - Ellie. Hope Juno enjoys settling in.
-
He sure is a cutie and those eyes!
-
@bjenkins33 No - Mku is a tri so I wanted a red/white. The tri has gone to a countryman of the breeders. Another red girl is in South London with someone who contacted me back last March.
Eye surgery went well, thanks - but now I can't wait to be able to get my eyes tested for proper glasses. I have been buying readers on the recommendation of @JENGOSMonkey - so far have 4 different ones - but although I can even see to drive in daylight now, my arms are not long enough to see anything close up. Which itself is a bit of an oxymoron ! Reading, cooking, eating, measuring out dog food, pouring a glass of wine, all take a different strength reading glasses !
Computer work isn't too bad, I can sit far enough away from the monitor and still just about reach the keyboard !
-
@zande we’d love to see a picture of Kito!
-
He’s so adorable! How old is he?
-
@chenke I am a photographer, wearing another hat - putting pictures on the Forum means you lose the copyright. I can't afford that. No pictures of Kito OR Mku !!
-
@zande - Same reason that I don't post pictures....
-
WHAT a cutie!!!! You and he are going to have SO much fun and laughter and so many adventures together!!!!! Hello little Juno!!!! Have a happy life little one!
-
@tanza Do you think many people realise that ? Loss of copyright is serious. Passing it over means someone else could make money from your work even if you don't want to.
-
@zande I've looked into this, but it doesn't concern me too much. I'm not a professional. I don't make a living from my pictures. And, I don't plan to.
Basenji's are something I REALLY enjoy. Part of the enjoyment is sharing mine with other people. If a person wants to they can strip the photo of all EXIF data. There are tools all over to help do that. A person can also Watermark their photos, which serves as a reminder to people that the photo "may" be copyrighted. The most important protection is to the register the photo with the appropriate agency ensuring that it's copyrighted. In the US, a violation entitles the copyright owner something like $25,000 per instance, plus attorney fees.
There's a lot of things in life that concern me. This just isn't one of them. But, I understand not everyone feels that way and that's perfectly ok too.

But you could put pictures on a site like Overdrive, or DropBox, or Google Drive. Then just give us a link and we can look and ooo and ahhh (without surrendering the copyright).

Based on what the boss, Alex, said in this post, the copyright issue is addressed in the rules primarily because of the way data is freely distributed online. When you post a picture here (or anywhere else online), there is no way to predict where that picture will turn up, who will use it, or what it would be used for.
Case in point: How many times have we seen a puppy photo on a "less reputable" breeders website, followed with remarks on the forum that dispute the ownership of said puppy?
-
@elbrant I guess we just stop posting pictures then.
-
@zande - It is a personal decision... I have found my pics that were many years ago on other websites... What I really am worried about and seen, especially now is scammers stealing pictures and trying to scam people for puppies.....
-
@jengosmonkey - I have for many years...
-
@elbrant - Many times I have seen pictures posted on the Forum show up on other sites...
-
@jengosmonkey - None of us are posting pictures for "a living", but to have people "steal" those pics for their own uses is not responsible and especially this past year there has been many scam sites that have stolen pictures of pups for sale that are pictures of pups that were \are clearly not from the scammer posting pups showing up on a scam website. So I just don't and have not for many years posted pictures here... I am more than happy to send a private message if there is something they would like to see or visit my website

As far as I can tell, the photo/copyright rules was not created to steal or hamper your ownership rights.
It's just kind of the way social media works. Facebook users should understand it. We see a picture of a sunset, or a meme, or a group of friends and often times we won't think anything about posting it on our own feeds to share with our circle of family and friends. Who knows who actually took the picture of that amazing sunrise? It would be nearly impossible to trace it back to it's origins. But, that doesn't stop us from wanting to share it. It's all so innocent.
Then you come across the people who want to take advantage of others. So, they troll the internet and gather up photos of puppies (just as a broad example). Then they put them online and suggest that the puppy is up for sale, but you have to pay upfront for the transport costs.
We are all adults here... at least adult enough to realize that there are good and bad people in the world. Be aware that there are scams. And that there's a huge number of legit people who would never think to hurt you.
Decide for yourself... we can only be responsible for our own actions.

What a charming fellow! Congratulations (Do you by any chance live near Tower Bridge?)
-
@chenke Thank you! He's 9 weeks old as of today :).
