Basenji Compared to Min Pin

    This may seem like an odd question but has anyone owned a Basenji and a Miniature Pinscher at some point? I was raised with a Min Pin and from the research I've done, the two breeds seem to have some similar characteristics. For example, my Min Pin wasn't very needy when it came to affection, she would constantly test the rules to see if our reaction was consistent but eventually it would "click", she is not aggressive toward other people but she does growl at dogs and persistent children. Anyway, I'm asking because I would like to get a better idea of this breed's characteristics before I bother anyone with trying to meet a Basenji in person. Thank you in advance for your experiences.

    I would suggest that you met Basenjis in person before going any further... Min Pin's are toy dogs and I have been around many.. Like any other breed depending on their breeding and from good breeders that are well socialized they can be fine...

    I have a min pin who is 15yrs old, almost 16, and he loves his B companion. They sleep together, play and even share food. He was a little stand offish when we first brought the puppy home but they quickly became fast friends. Just my experience...but just like anyother dog it depends on the dog🤷‍♀️

    In your experience, was the training similar between the two breeds or is the Basenji much more challenging to train?

    No, my min pin was waaaay easier. My B will train for about 10 to 15 min before she's done and wants to play or go bother her brother. But that's the breed so I don't push it and she will get there in her own time.

    Thank you. I have heard several B owners compare their dog to a toddler. I wanted to make sure it wasn't just an exaggeration. My childhood Min Pin was the only comparing point I had. I appreciate everyone's responses.

    MacPack: Yes, I know bestiality isn't illegal here - how stupid, and they did mention that on the radio. Also, the whole gang probably would platonically marry Topper, he is such a dear. My Shaye would REALLY like to marry Topper.

    I take Blaze into the senior's lodge to go visit Grandma (in a town of less than 300), sure enough, there's a gentleman there that knew what Blaze was. He was an archeologist back in his day. His last dig was in 1976 deep in the Congo, and he stayed with villagers and witnessed the hunts and the lives of the basenjis in the village. He told me about one hunt. The basenjis chase antelope into huge nets that are strung up in the forest like barriers. The nets are handmade with ropes and vines. Some of the hunters stay near the net and hide, the majority of the hunters take the basenjis to the water hole and wait. When the antelope arrived, they release the basenjis and chase behind almost soundlessly. You can really hear the gourd bells, which are mostly around the loins. The antelope hit the net and are shot with arrows. The basenjis have to get beaten off… they get a little too excited. He has some amazing pictures. I'm trying to borrow his album to scan, but he's not comfortable with that idea. He loves Blaze though and he knows the african word for the breed which I can never remember or pronounce.

    What an interesting group of pictures. I don't get a good feeling when looking at these pictures - I get a feeling that the animals look as if they are being exploited. The dog at the bottom right does looks a little like a basenji or pharoah hound or a mix of the two.

    gneigum, We posted the thread below and were wonderring if you would be interested in helping us. It would be greatly appreciated if you could! Let us know! Thanks for your consideration. We are currently in the process of looking to adopt a basenji. We have done all the research on the breed and learned about their traits and querks. We have come to the decision that a basenji is the right dog for us. However I suffer from allergies and want to make sure that I don't have an allergic reaction to our new family member. I have done alot of research and have read many artictles which say that basenji's are hypoallergetic. This is great, however no dog is truly allergy free. We have gone as far as visiting a breeder to meet their dogs and had a minor reaction. However I do not know if this was due to the fury little guy or the cigarette smoke in the residence (which I am also allergic to). Long story short, we are looking for a Saskatchewan Basenji owner that would be willing to let us meet their basenji to determine if allergies will be an issue. Please respond if you are a basenji owner in Saskatchewan or near by. Thanks!
