Barking Basenji

  • Abbey can hold a note for a whole minute when she baroos but bark? No, all she can get out is something that sounds like ERP!

That was funny.. I looked at it about 30 minutes ago, but got caught up on youtube looking at all things basenji or lure coursing or agility..I got hooked..

  • Medjai barks (kinda), but a whole lot better than any other B I've seen.

  • Jayden will bark occasionally when he is startled by a stranger. It is usuallly a single bark, a pause, and maybe a second single bark. The funny thing is, he usually does this right after a stranger says they have never heard of a basenji. I reply "It's the barkless dog." And then Jayden immediately barks to make me look stupid. I swear he knows what has been said. I think I've only heard Cory bark once and it was a higher pitched odd little bark.

Me, too. Rocky sits on my lap and watches youtube.com - my Basenjis stand up, with front paws on my desk, trying to figure out where these Basenjis are! They look behind the screen, under the desk, behind the desk, and barooooo!

This is pretty much how it is here too, only it is not just when strangers come to the door, if Roo is penned up when I come home, he barks like that. He didn't do it when he was puppy, but he didn't baroo then either, so I guess it just took time for him to find his 'voice' (not that he didn't scream and carry on when he was upset, and he's always had the cat noise/yawning thing.

If you don't laugh at this..I am so sorry I wasted your time…

  • That was cute. I like the "bleeccchhh" sound at the end of the R&W's baroo. The Black one looks embarressed that he let out a bark. Sort of a "I hate it when that happens!" look! I wish I could catch Cory's swearing on video. It isn't a bark and it isn't a whine. I swear she is muttering and cursing.

I know I love watching all those videos of beautiful basenjis and their barooing and coursing and what not..but this one just cracks us all up in our house..the kids laughed so hard I though we might have to give them oxygen…

Sorry, but I'd most likeley go for a beagle, that was my very first dog and he was awesome!! Got him off the street…my first 'rescue'...after that, crap, can I say this...a cat.....OUCH!!!...Yeah, I was very lucky with both my B pets, but as I get older, I'm not sure I would be able to handle a young B. However, as I look forward to retiring I'm more than happy to have multiple B's in my home. :) Older ones, like me :)

MacPack: Yes, I know bestiality isn't illegal here - how stupid, and they did mention that on the radio. Also, the whole gang probably would platonically marry Topper, he is such a dear. My Shaye would REALLY like to marry Topper.

I take Blaze into the senior's lodge to go visit Grandma (in a town of less than 300), sure enough, there's a gentleman there that knew what Blaze was. He was an archeologist back in his day. His last dig was in 1976 deep in the Congo, and he stayed with villagers and witnessed the hunts and the lives of the basenjis in the village. He told me about one hunt. The basenjis chase antelope into huge nets that are strung up in the forest like barriers. The nets are handmade with ropes and vines. Some of the hunters stay near the net and hide, the majority of the hunters take the basenjis to the water hole and wait. When the antelope arrived, they release the basenjis and chase behind almost soundlessly. You can really hear the gourd bells, which are mostly around the loins. The antelope hit the net and are shot with arrows. The basenjis have to get beaten off… they get a little too excited. He has some amazing pictures. I'm trying to borrow his album to scan, but he's not comfortable with that idea. He loves Blaze though and he knows the african word for the breed which I can never remember or pronounce.

What an interesting group of pictures. I don't get a good feeling when looking at these pictures - I get a feeling that the animals look as if they are being exploited. The dog at the bottom right does looks a little like a basenji or pharoah hound or a mix of the two.

I have two of the ones shown (red one laying down)… and one very large sandicast of a Tri Head that my mentors gave me...
