Trouble walking

  • Just today, I found my 12.5 yr old girl has trouble keeping her balance - her rear legs (one more than the other) can't seem to keep her up for long periods. Friday she was normal, Saturday she seemed to just want to lie on the couch. Today she is aware of her surroundings, can walk very slowly, did eat a little breakfast and most of her dinner. She is having a lump removed this week so not sure if this is related or something due to a tick bite (a week or so ago) or something else altogether. I will be calling the vet first thing in the morning but wondered if anyone else has encountered something like this.

  • I don't have experience with this, but I would be horrified if it happened to doodle. Please keep us updated!

  • my 13 and a half year old basenji has the same problem. Was your dog around any wild rabbits? Have your vet run a test for E Conculi Parasite transmitted by rabbit urine. Also have your dogs kidneys checked as it causes kidney failure. I treated mine with fluid therapy for 3 days then fed him plain wallaby Kefir yogurt.
    Hes doing much better....

  • Tick bites can cause paralysis, so definitely you need to check that out.

  • Sorry it took so long - the vet checked her out and she pinched a nerve (apparantly when she tried jumping on the bed). He checked for tick diseases, organ functions, etc etc. All fine but the x-rays did show a bone spur on one of the lower vertebra so that little jump was all it took. She's walking much better now and almost back to normal.

  • Glad to hear she is doing better. My girl Lady when she was a senior did a number on her back which resulted in her being less inclined to jump up on things, although it didn't affect her balance or hind legs.

Sophie was like that as a puppy. By 16 weeks she was happily going on 2 mile hikes and she was probably doing closer 4 miles with the running up and down the trail. She set the pace and did as much as or little as she wanted. If she got tired then we were willing to carry her but she just had a ton of energy.

@chilli07: after reading all posts, we changed Chilli's food to Innovo - Evo (no grain) this is the only product i can find here in melbourne..she hasn't completely stop but still scratching. might have something to do with her stealing food from the jack russell. found that out tonight! That is a big reason that I have for keeping both the kids on the same food. If Charlie manages to get into Zaires food I know it is ok. Also I have found that with a B and a Parsonn Russell in the house kennell feeding works best for me, as neither of these dogs will back down when it comes to food. :) Great to know there is someone else out there crazy enough to be owned by a B and a Russell at the same time. :D

This is very normal. I went to a dog show and brought my basenji with me and we walked around out side looking at vendors for a while and as soon as I sat down on a bench she just fell over in the shade. We gave her some water to cool down and she was fine. Basenjis love the sun but they know when to much is enough.:)

I work for a carpet cleaning company and we use a product called FLUOROSIL for pet stains. I don't know if you can order this because we get it wholesale, but you can try: www.interlinksupply.com If you can't get this product or don't want to wait for it to be shipped try 1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water. I'd probably try this first… might save you some money! Good luck.
