Looking for a basenji stud in St. Petersburg Florida

  • She is a one year old female

    1. she's too young to breed.
    2. get her spayed, enjoy your PET and don't add to the problem of poorly bred dogs.
  • Have you spoken with her breeder? Have you completed health testing? DNA testing for Fanconi and PRA? Thyroid testing and also Eye Exams (by a board certified Ophth Vet). Too young for hips, need to be 2yrs old. Has she been shown? Conformation/Performance?

  • Why do you want to breed her in the first place?

  • As other's have said, she is too young to be bred and you should be talking to your breeder. If they had intended for your girl to be bred they will help you choose the right male for her.

I don't personally believe that a dog MUST be a conformation champion to be bred but they must go thought the proper health testing and have something to offer the future of the breed. Not trying to put words in your mouth because you haven't stated your reasons for breeding, but if it's simply to make more basenjis ("just pets" "I want to make money" "it looks like fun" etc) than I urge you to reconsider!

    Good luck to you!

  • When you breed your bitch, you are putting her life at risk. Sure, problems don't usually happen but they occasionally do; would you know how to recognise them, and would you know what to do? I have had two emergency C-sections done and they can be quite expensive. Breeding is not cheap if you do it right, so if you think you're going to make money...

We have had our Basenji boy for just over a week. He came to us from Belarus to UK from a wonderful breeder who gave us lots of information, support and contact while we waited for him to be able to travel.[image: 1621799551369-received_507687556937191-resized.jpeg]

@rjbasenji - this is the time to align with a responsible breeder for a pup maybe in 2021. Because Basenjis only come in season once a year and their litter size is only 4-6 puppies, it is difficult to find one especially will all the people that "want" one... If you can visit with a breeder that would help you or if not call them on the phone and tell them why you think that a Basenji would be a good fit for your family/lifestyle.

All pups have been placed as responsible breeders have reservation lists. We are not at this time planning a litter for 2020 or 2021. I would be happy to talk to you about Basenjis. You can search for responsible breeders at www.basenji.org by state, however as far as I know all responsible breeders on the West Coast already have full reservation lists. You would be looking at litters possible in 2021. This is the time to connect with a responsible breeder and get on their reservation lists for 2021. And if you are looking for a dog that is hypoallergenic, Basenjis do shed and have dander so they are not really hypoallergenic. While they can do well with people with allergies, you need to spend time with them and more than one time. Be sure that you check out health testing yourself, regardless of what you might be advised. Tests for DNA testing is public knowledge at www.ofa.org. You need to have either a registration number or name to check this out for yourself to verify. I suggest all people looking for a Basenji, even my own, do this.

I would never sell a Basenji puppy as a potential Christmas Present ! (and I don't know any responsibile breeders who would either) Presents often get the wrapping torn off and are then discarded - how about waiting until after the festive season when things have calmed down and you have time to cope with the exigencies of a new puppy ? Tanza's idea of giving a photo might work but a live puppy under foot on Christmas Day, among all the relatives and parcels - No.

@nomrbddgs: I did find a lady for you, unfortunately, Luther is sick and has taken a turn for the worse recently, so that meeting was cancelled even before I could tell you. I haven't found anyone else remotely close. Sorry!!! Thanks very much! We greatly appreciate your help. Let us know if you hear of any other Saskatchewan Basenjis for us to meet!
