Indoor Playpen? XXL Dog Crate??? Please Help

    Trying to determine the best playpen, or bigger crate to keep Jaxx in while away at work, the metal ones get great reviews and are cheap, but Ive see the negative reviews and horror stories and I dont want to subject him to those possibilities.

    Plastic ones will be more ideal, but the hard part is finding one taller than 3 Feet and one that Jaxx one be able to escape from.

    Desperately trying to find him something with more room.

    Do not skimp on price.... as for wire (which is what I use) I get the best one I can find, especially when it comes to wire gage and wire spacing

    We got the samoyed this one, make it 4 sided, 2 panels overlapped for the top, and bought a crate pan. So it is 48 x 24 and 42 high. It is strong, very secure, and big.

    You can also buy it with a top separate, but doing it the way I did, I didn't need it.

    Can be deployed in any shape, such as 4ft x 4ft square, or 4ft 5in x 4ft 5in octagon<<

    My current idea which I might try to execute today is to get two of these toppaw playpens and find away to secure them on top of each other and if needed also add a cover problem is they are 26 inches high so 2 would make it around 4ft 3 inches... Ive read too many death and injury stories with the metal ones...

    @JaxxnBeer - climbing up 4ft is child's play for a Basenji..... and if plastic, be prepared for easy chew through (in my opinion and experience)

    I have used wire for about 40 years. A good quality wire is safe. Obviously if you have a strong dog who is determined to break out, you may need to go to the uber expensive crates that are almost solid metal. Few dogs need those. As Pat said, no top means no dog. They laugh at 6 feet, much less 40 inches. They can jump or climb easily. Plastic ones are more easily chewed unless the solid ones... which block view and air.

    I have the same story as nobarkus - we moved our first puppy's crate around a few times. Even from a full backyard view to a shared front bay window view (had to make room for B #2), she's always been pretty good. I think as long as the pup understands crate = happy place, you'll be fine with wherever. I used & still use treats. And to my much appreciated surprise, my little crate hater boy has become the model crated B of the 2 - he was soooooo vocal during his first month, but now he just lounges - and now my female is the whiner. :p

    My vet suggested not leaving any water for him as long as I am not gone longer than 3-4 hours. I stopped leaving water & it seemed at first to stop him from peeing but only for a short time. I feed him early enough in the day that he is out of his crate for several hours after eating. He isn't even crated daily because my sister is home from college right now & thus home during the day a lot. It's only when she has to go out that we crate. His crate being too big may be a possibility. It's a good size crate because I wanted him to have room since when I lived in FL he was crated for closer to 6 hours at any given time. Plus in FL he was still sleeping in his crate. I guess I could give a smaller one a try… As far as leaving him uncrated, we are working towards that. We leave him out if it's only like 30 minutes or so to try to see what he'll do. My goal is to eventually always leave him uncrated but right now I just don't trust him enough. We left him uncrated in my room one day & he ripped a huge chunk of the carpet out [down to the concrete!] So…yea. Haha.

    When I was trying to keep Tyler and Zoey in the Xpen (instead of my computer and bookcase like I do now), I actually nailed it to the hardwood floor. Now I have some screw bolts on the sliding glass door frame to hook the end panel to so that they can't move it to get to my desk/bookcase. The other end panel goes behind the bookcase next to the wall. There are ways to keep it in place.

    I have a 5yo BRAT boy that I am working on crate training. He would "explode" and freak out when I would try it. I then got a carrier (more den like than the wire crate) and put it in his "room". The first week, I left the door open. Then I started giving him treats by it, then inside it. Now, the only place he gets the "high value" treats is in his crate. I have left him in there for a little bit and he didnt "explode"- so it is slowly working. But with our older B's it takes more time. Get a soft bed or comfy blanket for it and some great treats (turkey, cheese, something really good) and only let her have them in there. good luck

    I agree i´ve used those methods on all my dog´s(long before Cesar came along) not only the basenji and never has a dog questioned my leadership.But I always praise and i´ve never used force never had the need for it so there i´m different.These methods are common methods with working dog´s I used to have a Boxer and i´ve just adjusted certain parts of it to fit the Basenji ;) Many of the dog´s in that show are just left to "run wild" no training or excercise and instead lot´s of silly things with people who humanize their dog´s.And they looked surprised if they need to take walks jeez I take mine out 4-5 times a day and two of the walks are 6 miles and he he plays with other dog´s every single day to keep him socialized as he´s growing into adulthood.I also show train him every day not more then 10-15 minutes just to keep it fresh in his mind. What people tend to forget obedience training is something that you have to keep doing continuously as their memory is not like ours so you have to keep it fresh in the mind. I probably stated the obvious but I do agree with Jazzys mum:)

    Yes husbands can be a trial at times. When my Kalya was dying from lymphoma hubby said no dogs for awhile! Kalya left on tues. for the bridge, on sat. we got a Basenji/Aussie mix, who was gonna be put down, and then3 months later got Mata Hauri Samuel to co-own. Now hubby is going in sept to the BOCA to see the african exhibit and meet some friends. Said he would love to at least see a tri! ggggg Carole
