Hope has a new B friend!

Basenji Talk

  • Basenjis aren't common here and theres never ever two basenjis in one spot - in fact ive been searching for other basenji owners for months and months to see if anyone wants to get together and let them have plays.

So -we went to do the dog park today, the local one just around the corner (theres about 5 fenced dog parks in townsville) that we usually go to every second day or so - we are well known and considered one of the "regulars"…. so i walks in today and let Hope off, only to stand up and scan the group of dogs to lay eyes on a puppy basenji!

So here i am squeal as the puppy basenji comes over "who owns the basenji! awww, pat pat...who owns the basenji!!!" lol. as a lady steps forward to acknowledge my excited demands. she then comes over and i express my absolute excitment and delight to see ( I must have looked like a mad woman haha) another basenji - out in townsville, let alone in my dog park!!

The two basenji's went off and played together too - its like they "knew" it was so sweet. I cant wait til he grows up some more and hope they get to play often as she lives just around the corner too (pure chance, same suburb and everything).

So thrilled!! I have been looking for local basenji people for ages and alls i has is my breeder :)

just wanted to share my excitment !

  • Yay for Basenji play!! We had a similar experience when Lewie met his first Basenji buddy- they play together unlike I've ever seen…

  • I totally understand 'squeal'! :)

How great that Hope will have a basenji playmate. And it's a male too, which will be a great match for Hope. I totally feel your excitement!

  • It's funny how they always know another basenji as "like me!" and play is wonderful. They speak the same body-language and it really shows in interactions. How lucky for you all that you live so close!

  • we are super excited and hope to catch up alot more at the dog park and hopefully become friends :)

its amazing how they just clicked. battin' each other, he tried to keep up with her - will be awesome when hes older and gets some speed - she'll have someone to give her a run for her money!!

makes me all ga-ga for another puppy :P but no…. :)

  • new puppy was there again today :) His name is Diodge (dee-oh-gee). he was obsessing with Hope - its like oh hay! … your like me! Hope was like oh i like you play play play ..... wait dogs running... zooom ...off she goes and leaves him behind lol so she finally stops for a number 2 break and the cheeky bugger had been watching her and noticed she stopped so he done a little burnout (b500) and then made his way over and crashed right into her while she was going number 2 - couldnt help but laugh. Now when she doesnt pay attention to him he barges her. Basenjis rock :) cant wait til he keeps up with her. We have another play date hopefully on sunday :)

  • We would love to see some play photos..if you can get them..

will get photos hopefully tomorrow if they come along to our play :) its just hard grabbing photos when theres a whole big park to play in - why bother the humans while they sit and talk :P he he. but there will be plenty of chances :)

  • stole some piccies from our last couple of play dates. they are so cute together.
hes growing up super fast. much more mellow then Hope was at that age.

Hope was crazy, bouncy basenji and hes quiet relaxed and happy to stay put. He does get little cheeky moments that remind me of the start of a b500 :)

will try and snap some new ones this week.

p.s. yep, they are lazing around at the dog park. its just gotten summer here the last week and everyone (including us humans) are trying to get used to the muggy humidity again. blergh

@rugosa LOL on the pig ear. But it's not just a basenji trait. One night it was storming and one of my rotts was fixated on one of the bedroom windows. I looked, there was a toad on the screen! The dog was so intense about wanting to get to it, my daughter went out in the rain and moved it from the window. From then until she died, day or night, I had to let her in the bedroom when it stormed to make sure the once-in-a-lifetime visitor wasn't there. They think more than many people give them credit for.

@jalex said in New pup!: @senjisilly i read in quite a few different places that looking at their teeth is an issue. She wont let me do anything actually but she does let me hold her. Its been a rough week. As with any dog/breed you need to be sure theyre a fit for your family and so far if she is a B I'm struggling to believe itll work out but we're trying! I appreciate the input and guidance, thank you! She's a puppy. Her behaviors are puppy behavior... period. Puppies bite, they do what they can get away with. She is darling, she definitely looks very basenji. But if you really have doubts, contact basenji rescue and let them find her a home while she's still a puppy. Frankly, I suspect you are letting BASENJI close your vision. They have quirks, but overall no better or worse than most breeds. All dogs take patience and that you be at least as persistent as they are. At her age, she doesn't get the option of "won't allow me to do anything." Without yelling, hitting or rough behavior, you really can turn it all around. Right now is the time she must learn you can check her teeth, look between her toes, check her ears, etc. At some point in life, it may be critical, so training her NOW is important. But it can also be relationship building and fun. :) Mary has one of the easiest to follow sites. You just start working on training so that she comes to see you as the one to guide her. To entertain her by helping her use her brain. It will be okay. :) Training on left, issues on right: http://www.clickerlessons.com/index.htm You have a world of help here, you can do this. :)

Thanks for your replies. I've started giving Sonia Glucosamine w/ MSM every day and we'll see how she does. I'll give you an update in about a month and let you know if it's helped or not.

@nomrbddgs: She may always be nasty, or it may be a newcomer thing. I have always had younger B's coming into my home. I've never introduced an older B into my home or an older dog for that matter. Perhaps some of the others have more experience. I know the domesticated dogs (most of them) would get over it, but I'm not sure about a B. I agree…I think it is too soon to tell. She is scared, and hurt, I don't think you can get an accurate assessment at this point. I would keep them separated until she is feeling 100% better, and more comfortable, then go slowly. But let your family know that she may have to go to another home, if the dogs can't work it out.
