Trying to introduce new b

Basenji Talk
  • We found an injured female B, took her to the vet, brought her home and she is very aggressive to our boy. He is cowering from her but she is baring her teeth at him and we are keeping her in a crate untl we figure out what to do with her. Will they get along or should we find another home for her before the kids get attached?

  • She may always be nasty, or it may be a newcomer thing. I have always had younger B's coming into my home. I've never introduced an older B into my home or an older dog for that matter. Perhaps some of the others have more experience. I know the domesticated dogs (most of them) would get over it, but I'm not sure about a B.

I agree…I think it is too soon to tell. She is scared, and hurt, I don't think you can get an accurate assessment at this point. I would keep them separated until she is feeling 100% better, and more comfortable, then go slowly. But let your family know that she may have to go to another home, if the dogs can't work it out.

Oddly, my B does worse when off her turf when meeting new dogs, and is much better meeting them at home. I have to say that the only way my B was okay with a new dog was if the new dog was crated and she got to sniff and check out the new dog without it jumping all over her. Once I knew my B was okay with the new dog, I put both dogs on leashes in case one became aggressive, and let them out together in one room.
  • What's your B's neck measure (trying to size a collar)?

You can find a lot of puppy collars at thrift shops for pretty cheap - would never pay full price for one. I'm getting mine at 14 weeks and was told that 8-12 inches was what was being used - then at 4- 6 months graduate to 10-14 inch collar.

I'm afraid If I do decide to get another I won't have a chance to introduce them beforehand as it Will probably be a puppy I bring from the US.. I doubt there will be a problem since she will be a young puppy…

Definitely looks like a basenji to me. If it was something like a lab, they would be in the pool hogging the space.

All three pups sleep in bed with us. We bought two double beds and stuck them togeather so we could all fit. It's still crowded. My next dog IS going to sleep in a crate!
