    We are not doing this for money we just want to honor and extraordinary dog and friend by having one of his sons.
    May sound stupid for some of you but we think, dogs like humans have a soul and they can influence people in a good way; the soul and personality of this dog really moves our lives. he is very special.

    One more time we respect all opinions and understand the problem with the genetics. we promes to have done the test he is missing before breeding.

    Doesn't look like any heath testing as been done and the pedigree is incomplete (can be seen at http://www.pedigrees.zandebasenjis.com/search.html). Most likely because he comes from Columbia. It would be good to have the complete pedigree and it would be great if you sent it to Sally Wallis at sally.wallis@btopenworld.com

    But breeding a litter usually produces more than 1 puppy. It means producing 4-6 puppies just so you can get 1 and there may be no boys so if you have your heart set on a son, you may not get that so then what?

    You will have been responsible for bringing these lives into this world and should then be responsible for them until they leave this world. IMO, stud dog owners are responsible for the pups their males produce. Are you willing to step up and take care of the pups if the dam's owner cannot or will not? Finding committed life long homes is no easy task and with the economy as it is, it has been particularly hard for breeders to find good homes.

    There are many factors to consider before breeding a litter.

    Hello Simba's person. I can tell you love Simba very much, and he is a very beautiful dog. But again, it is hard to know for sure about his genetic soundness, temperament, etc. just from pictures alone, which is why everyone here is going to ask you for his health tests and pedigree. The basenji breeders who speak up on this forum have done a lot to try to improve the overall breed, inside and out, and it is always devastating to hear of haphazard breeding that sets back the efforts of those who are trying to do right by the breed.

    I don't know if we can change your mind about breeding your dog here, or at least convince you to do it in a responsible and ethical manner. Please be aware that anyone with a bitch that would be willing to breed to your Simba, at this point, is not someone who has the best interests of the breed in mind. They might see your dog and agree that he is beautiful, but because he has no record of health testing, everybody is taking a risk with the health of the puppies. You might not be doing it for money, but the OTHER person might. Please don't do something that you will regret in the long run, or create misery for a dog that you helped bring into this world.

    Lots of Fanconi in that pedigree. You should really get your boy DNA'ed regardless if you breed or not, but certainly if you find a bitch to breed. That along with Hips, eyes, patellas, thryoid at the very least. That would go for the bitch also.

    After reading all, She is considering to Buy a Female to Breed Simba and if We can't found a home for the pups, we will be Responsible for all of them.

    You Vet doesn't do Fanconi DNA. You order the cheek swab and do the test yourself. Order from http://www.offa.org/dnatesting/fanconi.html

    Your vet cannot do the Fanconi DNA test...that is a kit that you must order and send back. Go go http://www.offa.org/dnatesting/fanconi.html for complete information and to order the kit.

    I'm not sure what's involved in the other tests, so I don't know if the vet can do those, either…more experienced people on this site can give you more information on how to properly proceed in getting them done.

    Vets do all the others. The tests are sent off for results for hips (to OFA), lab for Thyroid, your local Vet can do Patellas. Eyes are done by a specialist, ask your regular Vet for a referral.

    Carlos,
    Your Vet can't do the DNA test for Fanconi. You must order the DNA cheek swab from OFA at the link I gave you and make payment. Then when you get it, you just swab his cheek and send it back to OFA in the supplied envelope.

    Welcome to you and Simba. You've been given very good advice from the previous posters and I'm pleased that you're willing to take the advice.

    I have bred many beautiful and handsome Basenjis but quite a lot of them have never been bred, I like your philosophy about dogs' souls but it's important to remember to do the very best we can for those souls.

    We feed fresh meat always. We started out with kibble, but we find our B's are more healthy with meat and related chews (soft bones, cartilage, heart, etc.).

Never had a beggar b4 need help lol 90% of basenjis don't like water LOL and many of us use the spray/squirt bottles as training tools. These are considered non evasive training means and if perfectly harmless means. Best to give a verbal correction first of "AT AT" (yes right now he will ignore you) then squirt with the "AT AT", then he'll figure it out that you can just say the "AT AT" and if he ignores you like mine you should only have to just pick up the squirt bottle and he'll stop the naughty behavior. You can use the squirt bottle for just about any naughty behavior too other than begging, but try not to over use, try to use it more as you re-directive means after he is not working with alternate training techniques

    @Rocketdog: Hi all, Lurked around here for a couple of weeks, but now I'm joined and posting because I get the feeling that my newest addition to the family is part-Basenji. He's our third dog, but first possible basenji. Previously we had a border collie/labrador cross while I was growing up, and more recently a purebred Weimaraner who sadly had to be put to sleep in 2005 after suffering brain damage following a very sudden and unexpected series of seizures. Meet Rocky, or 'Rocket' as he's properly known. He was named for his ability to jump vertically and launch himself around the garden in a mad run going after anything that moves. [image: t9678z] [image: t9678z] [image: t9678z] Anyway! We adopted him from the local RSPCA shelter at 9 weeks of age. The shelter took in the pregnant bitch and all the pups were born there, no one ever knew what the father was or even looked like. The mother is black and white, and believed to be some kind of Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross (plausible from the picture they showed us of her, and Rocky seems to have a fairly wide face, afterall). The shelter were at a bit of a loss as to what to describe the puppies as, so they were just called 'terrier crosses'. The rest of the litter were either the same pattern/colouring as Rocky, same pattern in black and white, or mostly brown with black noses and the odd patch of white. We believe he is part Basenji. His colouring seems spot on (right down to the black nose and white-tipped tail), along with those ears (which everyone comments on when we meet people out walking!), his curled tail (which I sadly haven't got a picture of yet), and his voice. Probably shouldn't forget to mention that he is a massive handful, and I've never known such a wilful and downright cheeky dog in all my life :) Wouldn't change him for the world, though, he's a great personality. He is a very vocal boy, he makes the most bizarre noises, it was so weird the first time he sang to us - we never expected a dog to make that kind of sound! It was the singing that prompted me to read up on Basenjis, as I had heard in the past that they are renowned for 'yodelling'. He also does a really funny noise I can only describe as 'grumbling' and I've got him sort-of trained to say 'blah blah blah' back at me, and, if he's in a cheeky mood and being told off, he'll yell 'No!' right back at us :) I've poked around and listened to various sound samples and it's so strange, he does sound like a younger version of the recorded dogs! …and yes, that is a cat's bell on his collar. He loves nothing more than to disappear into the bushes in our garden trying to chase birds and squirrels. The bell scares them off and helps us find him :) So, what do you think? I'd love to hear some opinions from basenji owners who think, from the photos and my description, that he's really got some of that in him. dnjfkgnksghs,f,lkjftgkhfncsmil
