Perspective Basenji Family

  • Hello everyone,
The post title sums us up rather well, but if y’all are like us, you’ll want details;)

    Details
We’re looking to add a Basenji to our family. We have a Havanese pup now, will be adding a cat soon, and a Basenji in about two years when the Havanese and the cat are adults. Our reasoning is that a Basenji pup is more likely to assimilate other adult pets into its pack. And we’re largely here to learn from all the insight and advice you guys have for us.
We’re taking out Havanese to be patient and will be doing our research and adopting a mellow cat breed. We want to set up all of our furry family members for success. And that’s we’re here a couple of years early to ensure our Basenji has the best chance with us and so that we are as prepared for it as we can be.
    Cheers.

  • You're looking at two ends of the "toughness" spectrum. Seems like a good call to get the Basenji second. The big issue might be getting used to a dog who will bolt after one who won't.

  • I am not sure what you mean by two ends Of the toughness spectrum. Can you please say more?

  • One of my pups lived many long years with a couple of Havanese in Finland. They all got along fine. The Basenji was 'last in' to the pack. Good luck !

@tanza said in Benji the Basenji: It is important to know the health of the pup and/or their sire/dam Well said ! It may not seem important now - you can say you will never show or need to register your Basenji - but in a few year's time you may find you wish you had known the health test results of the parents. By constant checking and careful breeding, many lines have obviated the most devastating scourges, but they are still around. Better to know for sure if your puppy is tested and imperative to make certain his or her parents were.

We feed fresh meat always. We started out with kibble, but we find our B's are more healthy with meat and related chews (soft bones, cartilage, heart, etc.).

@nouno: His parents are also in Cyprus. His mother is 4 years old. Did not have any problems. His father is 2 years old and also did not have any problems. Not yet. Is too expensive as I have to send all the test to the USA. But I will get through with it as long as I am able to. Age that Fanconi can show up is from usually 3 years all the way till over 10 years

As mine age I try to keep a bit of weight on them because I know they may reach a stage when they just don't keep weight as the organs weaken.
