    Sounds like you have a wonderful pack of basenjis.
    I bet they are eager for spring to arrive, you are so far up north…I am from a town on the Swedish westcoast, Pippin is from a kennel not too, too far from there, but we both enjoy the Texas heat now.

    Please direct me to their site, would love to see them in pictures.

    Welcome! One of my bosses is from Finland - I shall have to ask her if Espoo is somewhere she knows.
    Your basenjis must be very hardy to withstand your Finnish winters - my guys find our Canadian winters bad enough. I think they would stage a revolt if I suggested going to Finland! ;)
    I checked out some of your website - your boys are just gorgeous!! Look forward to seeing more of them.

    Sorry I haven't been able to answer sooner. There is just so much work… But don't worry, I have been reading the forum even tough I haven't really had the time to write :)

    Petra, you are absolutely right. Our boys do have good winter coats, otherwise it would just be too cold for them. This winter specially was horribly cold: cars had trouble starting, trains were always late, some houses had problems with frozen water pipes etc... When it's that cold, our boys luckily go to "hibernate" mode. They mostly only wanted to the back yard and stayed there just long enough to lift their foot once and then they ran straight back inside :)

    Problem with winter jackets is that they never really fit for a basenji. If the tail is comfortably, then all the big muscles on hind legs are also exposed and that just doesn't work. I decided to make raincoats and winter jackets for both boys myself, because the jackets in stores just weren't good enough (and they are quite expensive). Last winter I finished 1 raincoat, this winter the second raincoat and I started making the first winter coat. If this pace continues, I might have all the jackets made in 2013 xD

    Boys are so happy the spring has arrived. They could walk for miles, there is so much to sniff, search and hunt! And obviously there are really delicious scents outside because every time we come back inside, both boys search the biggest stuffed toys they can and then they start to ...hmm... "practice" :o

    @abonnard Pee pads got me through in the end, she would pee every 20 mins for the first months, then 40 mins, then she suddenly went to being able to hold it for many hours. One of the best purchases I got before she arrived was a small carpet washer, saved my sanity. The cleanup is so key otherwise they go back to the same spot.

    @Motala - That is good that you talked to Jan and glad to hear that she had not been spayed. I still think that your Vet and you should connect with Dr. Gonto about your girl's blood work and blood gas results and if he has any thoughts about it.

    @msjames, @tanza did you a solid favor outlining expectations. Networking really is key to finding a "reputable" breeder. Most show their dogs and are connected to other breeders through showing. They all seem to know who is planning a litter and who isn't. I completely agree with Pat that you should meet your breeder in person prior to the puppies even being born. You can learn a lot. Is a Basenji right for you? If you want a dog to hang with you in the driveway with the garage door open as you chat with neighbors, or stand calmly with the front door open as you receive a UPS package... ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Basenjis will bolt. they'll be gone in a second. They see it. They chase it. And if you think you have them trained... no. They've trained you. When they see it they will chase it. Basenjis, in my experience, need exercise. Mine get two walks a day. When they don't, they can be destructive. They're not shy about expressing frustration or displeasure through chewing up your best stuff. A big secure yard can mitigate this, but that's not a guarantee. They love seeing outside, so keep your blinds and drapes open otherwise they may open them themselves even if that requires chewing through them. They will climb onto windowsills, tables and low counter tops. They are capable of scaling a six-foot fence. They are known to climb trees. These are extreme examples, but better to know now. They are super affectionate. They can be trained... to a point. They are clowns and provide endless entertainment. A Basenji baroo is the best sound ever! They love to snuggle and will sleep on your bed and under the spreads and sheets if you let them. They love to share body heat. Tail twitches when I return home are the best!
