Puppies with only 2 legs

Off Topic
  • This litter of Chihuahuas was born without front legs. (Or maybe the dam chewed them off?) They don't know that they are "different" than other dogs. I have to say they are the cutest little stinkers, especially when they are bouncing around hehe. :D

  • oh how adorable..but is so sad..wonder what happened to them.
Sweet story though and I will look for updates on that site..

  • A litter that has 3 apparently normal puppies who are all missing their front legs led me to believe that they could have been bitten off by their dam at birth or soon thereafter. Motherhood comes natural to most dogs but sometimes the dam will make serious mistakes or even kill her pups. First-time, nervous, or mentally unstable dams are the usual culprits. It's heartbreaking but it happens.

People will be fighting to adopt those pups though. No doubt about that.

  • I believe many folks are in line to adopt them.
I hope the owner of the bitch get her fixed.
    Sigh.

I agree Sharron….. regardless of how cute they are... and how well they seem to get along... it is a tough road for them.....

And add to that, a few years ago, we had a poster here that the bitch killed or seriously disfigured the pups... I don't think we ever heard what the final out come was... but goes to show that breeding is not for the beginner that just wants to see puppies born. Might be fine... could be horrible.

  • The fact that the same legs are missing from all the dogs makes me think it is a genetic defect. I can't get my head around the idea that the mother, even if a first time mother with no idea what do to, would bite both front legs off them all - it might be more random in that instance, or more likely she'd have killed them. Sad story all the same. They will have a rough life, but maybe they won't know that so much as their owners will. Like you, I sure hope the mother is immediately fixed.

  • Well, bless them. Animals are resilient and they will go about their lives as if nothing is wrong with them. And there will always be those dear people who will lovingly care for little creatures like this. However, I agree with other posters who have indicated that the bitch NEEDS to be spayed. Whether it is a DNA problem or the bitch doing this to the newborns, spaying needs to be done to ensure this doesn't happen again.

This is why I hate posting. I wasn't mad at you either, just didn't think you understood the process. We've all had bad experiences which is why we need to learn from others. There are quicker methods (think wringing their neck-literally) but that's not something I could do. Chopping off the head I have no problem with when the bird is older, but little chicks and ducklings get to me. I know better when going to the vet now, but, at that time, I thought the vet knew what she was doing-obviously not.(with the dog that she blew four veins) This dog was 17 1/2 years old and didn't deserve that at the end of life. He may have been struggling, but you would think after she blew the first vein she would have sedated him then rather that keep trying. Yes, I was with the dog and was not happy with her explanation. There was no reason for it. There are still a lot of people (they just don't admit to it, because they don't know a better method? or just couldn't be bothered? Who knows?) who still use the freezer method. Am I cruel, I can be when I have to be, but I just prefer a simpler method. And I am well aware of the rocks in the sack method. My father was from the old country (hungary) and could be quite cruel. They were never pets or living things-simply livestock-but he wasn't a nice person anyway. As for the vet not putting an animal to sleep? Lived it. I had one dog who was off the wall. Something was simply crossed upstairs neurologically. He started having seizures at about 18 months, but came out of them viciously and could never settle down. The vet insisted I sign him over to him and if he deemed it necessary, he would put him to sleep since he was so young. Yes, there was a euthanasia contract to that effect. The vet kept him for a few days, phoned me up and asked me how I lived with him so long. He could not believe how bad he was. He did put him to sleep after that. But these are a couple of reasons why I am so leary of vets. I've had a few bad experiences with them.

These little fatties are doing sooooooo well. Im used to ACD babies losing weight in the first couple of days, then gaining, doubling their weight around day 10ish… Not with these guys, no weight loss, all have doubled their weight by day 6 ... Mumma Crystal doesnt even look like she has a lot of milk at all, clearly what she does have is pretty damn good though !!! Its interesting that for this litter I didnt feed Crystal puppy food at all during her pregnancy, as I have done for all my previous litters, and the pups were good weights at birth, and are now gaining so well ;)... Certainly food for thought, (pardon the pun :D)...

They really are beautiful puppies. You have done a great job with them that was lot of puppies to care for at one time. I do so wish I could have one but we want another Basenji at one point and I could not have it then. Makes me sad as my husband will tell you I have this fit called I want what I want when I want it. Must be why Jaycee and I get along so well we act to much a like. Ha! Ha! I am sure you will get great homes for your babies. Rita Jean
