Photo Contest for Adopted Dogs

Basenji Rescue
  • Patricia McConnell (author of The Other End of The Leash, dog trainer, and animal behaviorist) is running a photo contest for her newest training booklet. She wants a photo of an adopted dog for the cover!

I know lots of you have gorgeous adopted Bs and mixes, so I thought I'd share the opportunity (even if it means Cooper has less of a shot at it!). I think Bs are so striking, one might just make an excellent cover photo!

Here's the link with the requirements for the photo:

Reading the story in the first link, I didn't look at the others after that, literally made me nauseous. It's hard to imagine a person could do that to any living creature and I hate the fact that animal abuse laws have not been updated and therefore do not give out as harsh of punishments as they should.

We are lucky enough to have several of the pack in our Sunday group. Last Sunday Butler (Batboy) and Kizzie were there, we also see Kongo (Afrika) and Flash on occasion. Kizzie (5 months old when captured) was always so shy, even at the park she hung back and her folks sometimes had difficulty catching her to leave, but Sunday she was right in the group, ran in a big 23-basenji run, and came right to her 'mom' easily, what a change. It was a thrill to see her playing with the other basenjis and being so close to the humans, coming to her folks to be petted. Wow, what a lucky basenji! Butler (Batboy) was only 8 days old when captured, so he has grown up with humans and is not at all shy, comes right up to get petted and is really bonded with his human and basenji brother (an older "Holland" dog, they look very much alike). It's great that all the adopters have a group to share successes and challenges.

Hi jagm - Are you really sure you want puppies? Have you ever bred a litter before? It is truly more work than I would have ever thought, especially if you are doing all of the right things, as listed above by tanza & lvoss. Are you prepared to keep 6 or so puppies forever? I used to think to neuter & spay was cruel as well, but realistically, that's only a selfish notion. Good luck in finding your boy a companion! I found one for my girl & that's the best thing I could have done for her, other than having her spayed.
