  • Well, we recieved an email from the coordinator of the B we want to adopt. She is ready to set up a home visit… I figure that's better than not hearing back from them. Huh? Also, what are they looking at when they come for a home visit?

They are looking for the best fit for dog and the family. There is no magic formula. The goal is for the rescue dog to find their forever home with a person or family that will love, care, exercise, and provide for their needs. At the same time, they want the people/person who is adopting to have and be able to make that commitment.

  • Often, with the young and social rescue b's, we have a lot of folks who want the dog.
I try to tell everyone what Jason said, we match the dog and home.
I also tell them that their b will come along, sometimes its just not a quickly as the adopters wish.

  • They also look at your home and how it is set up, in regards of how a quickthinking basenji could get out, as far as fencing and such. Basenjis are notorius for trying to get out..whether sneeking between legs in a door opening or scaling a fence or even digging under. If the home of a potential adopter has a low fence or young kids that open doors to the outside without paying attention to a potential basenji in "I want out" mode, it could be a recipe for disaster.
Good luck, it is exciting to have a homevisit, that means you are so much closer to a new family member..

  • Be ready check house over for things that could get the B hurt and fix that now so you would be ready. Know were the B will sleep and know if your using a crate when your gone or at night. So happy for you and wish you the very BEST of LUCK.

  • Thanks for all the help everyone! I'll keep ya posted!

  • Home visits look at fencing, space UNDER the fence, doorways (and the ability to gate off a safe-area by the front door), is there a busy street outside, kids that may not be careful with the door. Things/situations that may be harmful for a basenji. It is really a safety visit, and looking for the right fit as well. If your home is lovely and neat and you seem to prize your possessions, and the basenji in question is a young Tazmanian Devil, they might recommend a more mature dog for you, for example! Be yourself and share your concerns, and be receptive to the concerns of the home visit person, you will be fine!

I'm happy to hear the good news. You have a good coordinator.
My application and request to adopt fell through the cracks, so I'm happy to hear people in your area are efficient and on the ball. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Laura, You have posted under someone's thread looking to adopt. Hopefully people will still see it but you might get more attention on a new thread. I am starting one for you and will add the link. http://www.basenjiforums.com/showthread.php?16376-For-Laura-(-yodels2u)-seeing-breeder-wants-2-puppies&p=173379#post173379 That should take you to the thread. Good luck in your search. I know members here will have some breeders for you. Also, you might consider BRAT or rescues. While puppies not that common, they do come along. Also considering older pups (6 to 10 mos) from breeders that didn't work out for show but would be great as pets will broaden your options.

Awww. Such a cute little girl. I think that we would be a good foster for a dog like her, or one of the FL dogs. We have experience working with pathologically shy dogs. We have an already established relationship with a great local trainer, and with a veterinary behaviorist. We have 3 dogs here to help with the socialization. But we have 3 dogs, and a fourth coming within the year. I'm afraid my heart is bigger than what we can really handle. I'm also afraid because there is no guarantee she will be adopted. If I knew it was short-term, and she could go to another place after a few months of work, I would be much more inclined to jump at the chance to foster. But, with the cats we foster, one has been here a year (tomorrow will be a year actually), and another we finally gave in and adopted after 2 years of swearing we wouldn't. The "normal" cats get adopted quickly (we have had about 10 go through our house, with the longest staying 6 mos.), but the behavior cases that need socialization and desensitization/counter conditioning work tend to stay. We have only had 2 foster dogs, and they were great and found great homes, but we are running out of friends to convince to adopt dogs. :) -Nicole

She looks a lot like my Katie. We say Basenji/Shepherd for Katie too. We think Basenji because of her voice, wrinkles, curly tail, avid prey drive, penchant for lure coursing, nightly grooming rituals, and get-into-everything-ness, although it could be any of the primitive/pariah type dogs, so the Basenji could be complete fantasy. -Nicole

Hi jagm - Are you really sure you want puppies? Have you ever bred a litter before? It is truly more work than I would have ever thought, especially if you are doing all of the right things, as listed above by tanza & lvoss. Are you prepared to keep 6 or so puppies forever? I used to think to neuter & spay was cruel as well, but realistically, that's only a selfish notion. Good luck in finding your boy a companion! I found one for my girl & that's the best thing I could have done for her, other than having her spayed.

hi sharon. I feel like I know you. I have read your stuff on Brat. I am glad that you are getting the word out on Brat. Mabel, My B was adopted from there. I cannot say enough good things about people in that organization. Actually I'm in that organization. We are good people. Mabel's foster was very helpful with helping me understand her behavior. I think a lot of it was due to fact Mabel is an alpha female. Well just thought I would say hi bubsgram94
