Dexter :)

  • @DexterDex:

I tried to upload a few more pictures in my original post, but it keeps saying that a security token was missing…

I just had this problem. Turns out the pictures were larger than 640x480. If yours are, you'll have to resize them to make them smaller.

  • Thanks!!

Here are the other two. :) Such a sleepy head.

  • Oh, he is absolutely precious! When my Lucy was that little, she used to love to burrow under the covers… and I was such a protective mom, I didn't let her! I was convinced she would suffocate.... I didn't realize it's just basenji behavior at its finest.

    Adorable! :)

  • what a cutie! suki used to like to sleep with her head on my neck like that too! so snuggly!

  • Houston

Too cute..what a sweet little thing. How old is he?

  • Patty, I'm like that too! I check to make sure that his face isn't covered, and, if his nose is against the side of his bed or anything, I tilt his head away to give him more "breathing room" haha.
I loooooooooooooove how snugly my baby is.
He was born on December 29, so tomorrow he will be two months old!

  • What a sweet little dude! :) Puppies need so much sleep - big deep sleeps. Right now, Kipawa is crashed out in front of the fireplace.

  • Very sweet photos.

  • He is just so sweet! I see why you are head over heels for him.

  • First Basenji's

    Such a sweet, cuddly pup.

  • Okay this officially does it… am leaving the forums next year from about Nov to April so I don't overload and die from wanting cute puppies.

    What an adorable pup!

  • Haha, thanks everyone! I got my first taste of bothersome Dexter this morning- so far, I had only experienced lovable, fun Dexter- when he decided around 5 AM that I needed to wake up so that he could jump all over my head and try to chew my hair off only a couple hours before I had to wake up for class. Of course, two minutes after my alarm went off to wake me up- I was still up- Dex decided to go back to bed. Hmph. lol

Okay, but tell me you weren't smiling through it all… I dare you. :D It is so hard to be even a little mad at a basenji, especially when it is yours.

  • Enjoy those sleepy times now, because, they are just a genetic trick to get you to lower your defenses and learn to love and adore those little critters, and once they have you hooked around their curly tails, then, and only then does that Basenjiness come out roaring. All the pups are so darling.

  • I LOVE the Basenji neck cuddle!!!!

  • Awww…how cute! I love the picture of him all snuggled under the covers with his toy!

I agree with Fran about puppies sleeping deeply...last night Flame was asleep on Earl's lap. When he (Earl) had to get up, he handed Flame over to me and I swear the little guy didn't even wake up!

  • Adorable! It's great seeing all the new puppies working so hard at wriggling their way into our hearts:)

  • Haha, Yeah. It is too hard to be mad at the little guy. I'm home for a break in between my classes, and I'm having a hard time having to leave him in the crate and go back :(

And, Deschroedter, I've read on here a few times about how the lovable, sleepy puppy phase is just a trap to make you fall in love before they show you the real basenji in them! That's so funny.

I also love the neck cuddle and sleeping with his toy pic. <3

And, LindaH, I know exactly what you mean! When he falls asleep on my lap and I need to move, I just scoop my hands flat under him and carry him to his crate- not a stir! :D

  • Dexter the Delicious is cute… be careful what you name him, as he may become that... i.e. Dexter the Devilicious! lol

    There's always Buster Point-Dexter?

    Saint Dexter Louisiana? :)

  • Lol, Hmmm he may become what I name him? In that case his call name has already condemned him- my fiance told me that the reason he suggested Dexter to me is because he got it off of the TV show "Dexter"…about the serial killer  Great, huh? haha

I like Buster Point-Dexter :) I'll have to think about this one for a little while...

I am not in your area, but ... you should know that dog training is about teaching you how to interact with your dog, as opposed to teaching your dog how to do things. Most area Kennel Clubs offer training where you are your dogs partner in the class. The things you will learn will last your lifetime. I applaud the non-punitive approach. A lot of people fly off the handle when their dog chews on the wrong thing, or doesn't quite have potty training down. One of the best things you can do is give them love when they do it right and don't react when they don't. Recognize that he's just a pup. You can trade an acceptable chew toy for your shoes, and you can avoid the problem by closing the closet door so your pup can't get to your shoes. Accidents will happen and learning to potty doesn't happen overnight. Just provide a lot of verbal love when the pup gets it right and don't react when he doesn't. Love and praise are the best tools in your training bag. Congrats on your pup. Can't wait to hear about all of your adventures!

Thanks everyone! We couldn't be happier, he is everything we could have asked for! Still training for the therapy route, but we certainly won't force it on him if he isn't enjoying it. He wants a sister…I mean WE want him to have a sister :)... but we're probably going to hold off another couple years before doing so! Especially since we may possibly be moving in the next year or so.
