  • Donna,
Glad to see you joined the forum! You'll be hooked in no time, basenji or no basenji. You'll learn lots, and by the time you finally get your puppy, you'll practically be an expert on all things 'senji. :)

  • You may want to look at a BRAT basenji, the rescues are sometimes very nice dogs that were surrendered due to loss of home or life. I got one of my girls back from a no kill shelter in NY when her owner was killed in a logging accident and there was no one to claim his dog. Fortunately the shelter had her registration paperwork and was able to track me down to retrieve my dog. A rescue is about 1/4 the cost of a breeder puppy if cost is a major issue, and the dog would already be spayed or neutered and up to date on all its shots.

  • Have you tried Hounds of Timar? I don't know if Jean bred this year, but she may know something. She doesn't have a website, but your best bet is to call her as she doesn't get to her e-mail regularily.

I second this one…Jean is an excellent breeder and has some really cool dogs - she is in upstate NY. I have one of her boys from her litter last year and he is beautiful and has a great temperament. I think Jean co-bred a litter this year. Also, if your heart isn't set on a puppy, she may have some young adult retired show dogs.

To the OP, I know you said the breeder you talked with had pups but they were out of your price range. In general in the Northeast I think you should expect to pay $900 - $1000 for a basenji puppy from a responsible breeder.

  • Welcome to the forum and I hope you soon get your longed-for Basenji.

  • Welcome from Western NY!

  • Thank you everyone for your encouraging words and suggestions. I did try Hounds of Timar and although Jean said they have puppies, they many not be available for sale and won't know for at least a few more weeks. I have another prospect that I'm waiting to hear on, a little girl red and white and I just hope and pray it all works out and I can get her. I'm just waiting for the owner to get back to me. It would mean so much to me if I can get this little girl.

  • Subaruthie, just wondering were in western New York you're from?

  • Good luck in your search, remember to check out health testing yourself… don't just rely on what people might tell you.

  • Is this person a breeder or someone who is selling a Basenji that they have acquired? As Pat says, you want to make sure the proper health checks are in place.

I'm in Rochester, NY and I actually have a deposit on the litter that Jean currently has. I am not sure what the availability is but I know that this litter is all boys, if you were still looking for a girl. She co-bred with Kyle C. at Kaleonahe Basenji's. He has some pictures up on his site. www.Kaleonahe.com. My experience with Jean has been great so far. I have been out to see her a couple of times. I can't wait to pick up my pup in 3 weeks!

Congrats on the soon to be new pup…please post pics when you get him!

  • As of right now, I will be picking up my little girl on Friday. She is from a breeder who has been breeding and showing for 19 years. I am so looking forward to seeing her. In the meantime I've been shopping for a new crate, chew bones, etc. I am so excited.

  • Wow, congratulations on your basenji girl! Can't wait to see photos!

  • Congrats, where is your girl from ??

  • I can post a picture, but I can't figure out how. Can someone explain how and I'll try to post it.

Oops, well I did something right and there is a thumbnail image of her.

  • Really cute…is her breeder Andrew @ Kivu?

Really cute!!! and that would be my guess too…. Andrew... Let us know as many of us are related by our Basenjis.... And some of Andrew's (if that is the breeder) has related Basenjis to my C-Me and Franie.....

  • Wow, she is adorable..how exciting…congratulations again.

My heart breaks reading your wonderful story of Dinah - it is so clear she is a huge part of your heart -you will have such wonderful memories of her when it is her time to give up the pain. I also do not believe dogs don't have souls - of course they do - the unconditional love they give, the way they try to help when you are emotionally suffering, the joy they get when they see you coming after a separation - all these and more are proof they are very soulful. A loving companion dog is God's gift. All our hearts are with you, and our tears flow with yours. God bless.

I look forward to your pictures. I'm a technophobe too - I keep telling myself I can do it but so far haven't posted any. One of my bitches was spoiled for the show ring by such a judge who didn't know how to approach a hound (although he was a Saluki judge and should have!). She was experienced at showing as well but was traumatised because when she backed away at his front on, silly voice approach she nearly fell from the table! Of course she blamed the fall on his approach. I worked on her intensively but to no avail. Yes, Basenjis on the whole are friendly and they never forget a friend either!

Bungwa has a very dry mouth and I only managed to get a very tiny white patch on the test card but it was still sufficient to do the test with that. It only turns white when it's dry - the instructions are quite explicit. Of course as Pat says it could be a bad test form.
