  • Hello everyone, I'm Jeff. I currently do not own a Basenji but will be the proud owner of a female real soon. Thanks for welcoming. I hope to find some helpful info on these forums.

  • Welcome, Jeff! A year ago I was in the same situation as you - knowing I would be getting a basenji within a year. I joined the forum in February and have been learning ever since. Now I have a wonderful teacher - my own basenji boy. All I can say is learn, learn, learn and really determine if this breed will fit into your lifestyle.

The best thing I ever did was to go to dog shows and meet various breeders. I concentrated on talking to those who were listed on the Basenji Club of America web site. It wasn't long before I found the breeders I knew would provide me with a puppy that would have a great temperment and that I would be proud to own (but maybe I think basenjis own us) :).

Also, knowing about the parentage of your prospective dog is a must. The parent dogs need to have been Fanconi tested. If you do a search on Fanconi in the search area of this website, you will find tons of information.

Remember, there are also a number of wonderful dogs that you can get through BRAT (Basenji Rescue and Transport).

Welcome, from another Ohioan. We are on the north side of columbus and have 1 r/w boy. We have occasionaly taken him to the Westerville dog park but his behavior has not be great lately. We have cut back. We also help BRAT transport and foster. Great to have more B's in Ohio. I see so few of them in Columbus.

First off, Welcome to our site of valueable Basenji information. I have learned so much linking into this site, we have lots of laughs as well. My B, Sahara, crosses her legs all the time, she is such a showoff and often has the regal queen look. I love the look myself, they are such beautiful dogs I must say, not that I am partial or anything. Your Piper is so cute, welcome again.

@WriggleysMom: We've always had rescues and I feel like I've missed out on puppy antics, so I'm debating. Toby doesn't baroo or wag his tail and I really miss being met at the door with a welcome baroo and a tail trying to wag itself off!! I had a puppy and was getting the urge for another but now we have a 7-mo old foster and I can't take my eyes off her. I remembered I really did not miss that!

Dave hello, I also am new to this site. I had my frist Basenji for sixteen years and lost her last year. I could only go for about a month before getting my next Basenji. I really love this breed I have two now. Good luck in your search for your next Basenji.
