Time running out for Isis :(

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • @jayfabares:

My cat is now exhibiting some hair loss on her front limbs. She's 8 yrs old & healthy… so I am hoping it is just stress.

Kitty might be allergic to bug bites. I have one who is like that. Sumi will lose hair, but not seem to scratch much. Just go bald in spots. She has to be kept on flea prevention year-round. Otherwise she begins to look like she needs a full-body wig.

So sorry to hear about Isis. She will tell you what her wishes are. If she wants to continue the fight, help her….if she's too tired, she will communicate that to you. As difficult as this is, remember we will see all of them again when we join them on the other side of the rainbow bridge.

    My thoughts are with you.

  • I am so sorry to hear about Isis, how heartbreaing it is when you have to make a decision between carrying on or giving tham final peace.

I agree with AJsHuman - Isis will let you know if she is ready to go, it'll show in her eyes.

  • Hugs for you at this time. The best hardest gift we give our beloved animals is the gift of peace.
    Hugs, hugs, hugs.

  • Sending you both hugs..this is a very hard and trying time for you ..

  • The Isis thread is about a year old. Here is the thread about her passing:

  • HI sharronhulbut, thanks and thank u patty. and no i don't know how to start a new thread!. SORRY!. sharron, i have 2 test here !! the old one said; probableat-riskforfanconi syndrome then for some reason igot a new one today in the mail!, saying it was rerun, do to a evaluation error!??? what is that//?.and i got a certificate with it too, probable lear/normal for fanconi !! im soo confussed here!,& i don't know why it was rerun!!!???. i didnt'ask for a re-do!. why would i have gotten another one that was redone, and within 2 months apart? have u ever heard of this being done before??!. pls help me with this.

  • Labs make mistakes so be glad that they reconized it and reran the test.

  • hi tanza!, how's everything going?. i thought that the only reason they'll run the test again is if the first test was indeterminate/equivocal! but my first test saying: homozygous A/A= at risk for developing fanconi. !!

  • jeneke, can u tell me how to start a new thread?. and is it ok to give a basenji tuna fish?? my basenji love's it!!!!!!!!!!!. he goes crazy just by the smell of it!!. thks.

  • Re tuna, it does have mercury in it..give it only to them I would say, less than once a month..but others will correct me if I am wrong.

  • thks sharronhurlbut, i wasnt sure about this and i gave him a can of it . the type thats in water not the oil type. but man oh man he goes crazy for this stuff! he fallows me like a puppy listens really , really good for me too!!!!!!!> he's like a kid that just learned what candy is!. i'll just give it to him once a month then!!. thks again.& have a ggod night!.

  • I read something recently about the whole mercury in tuna thing that I found very interesting and very educational. Before you ask, no, it was not info put out by the fishing industry. It was a book I was reading a little out of that was about the health benefits of a kosher diet. It stated that there is something neat about tuna fish that I hadn't heard before. In tuna, there seems to be some chemical or property which lends itself to the purpose of removing mercury from our system. Because it has been a little while and I didn't pay close enough attention I cannot tell you what this property that the tuna has is and I am sorry for that. I'm sure it would be wise to further research information about it. But it was published information that suggested that eating tuna fish actually reduced one's likelyhood for mercury poisoning, in spite of what the mercury test results indicate the tuna to have. I guess this is sort of like how they are now telling us that the use of sun block may actually be increasing our risk of skin cancer. Personally, I think we will all eventually die from something, and over-worrying something like this is not a direction I will choose to go. But that is a decision which I have made only for myself, you will have to make your own. Perhaps some of you out there are already aware of this tuna/mercury study and can share your knowledge with us.

@GriffinsMom, my girl Lady had a suspected brain tumour when she had a seizure at 13 years of age. My vet put her on Prednisone, and things improved. She was on and off the drug for the next few years until she really started to get worse at just short of 16 years old. My vet said that for some, Prednisone seems to shrink the tumour. Of course, it would depend on size and location. I don't want to give false hope, but you might inquire about it.

I decided not to use the plaque off..I have been brushing more but not everyday as I will going forward. I think I decided not to because last year a I expected to have his dental and sort of fix the problem that way and start good habits..then his surgery happened and really it's taken a good long while to get him back on track…I didn't want to add anything that could throw off his system.

Just wanted to update this thread with Dr. Gonto's response: My words in black and Dr. Gonto's in red. Do you think her results will still be accurate, given she threw up this morning? That should be fine. So long as you remind me this happened when the results are given. Not sure if an hour is enough time for her pills to be absorbed? Maybe, maybe not, but ONE dose is not going to drastically alter her baseline levels. It is just that if the gas is drawn TOO soon, then the levels are artifically high as the blood is flooded with suppliments. TOO early after pills is FAR worse then too late, for accuracy. I had already rescheduled her appointment but will be good to know for next time, just in case.

Read all the quotes and statements on Fanconi and work out how contradictory it is for yourself. I don't think many UK Basenji owners do a Fanconi 'strip monthly' and certainly some breeders do advocate no test. Are such breeders irresponsible not necessarily. A 'probable' diagnosis on any medical condition is hardly a scientic diagnosis to say the least but testing is better than not and is certainly better than doing nothing.

Hugs to Isis… and hopefully the blood gases were done and that Dr. Gonto was able to help you and your Vet with the right protocol program for Isis.... And there is a Fanconi yahoo list for only people with affected dogs. It would really be good for you to join that list. If you seach the yahoo list for Basenjis and Fanconi you should be able to find it.

@Rivermoon: I had heard people were doing the blood gas tests on their "probably affected" dogs. Apache had just turned 2 when I got the results and I started strip testing him immediately. I've already told my husband when he turns 3 I'm taking him in for a blood gas test…I'm wondering if I should do it earlier. I'm still strip testing Chey too even though she came back as "probably a carrier". My feeling is that until they get the actual DNA test, I'm not taking any chances. And since the strips don't last long, no sense in them going to waste….
