    thank you for the test suggestion. i'll do that asap. i want to call some vets- but i thought maybe ppl in the area who own basenjis could give a good recommendation.

    I'm not crazy about VCA either, unless needed for an emergency. I can't help you with a vet in your area but you may want to try to PM basenjibratz as they're closer to where you live. I hope it's nothing serious.

    When you buy the strips, make sure you get the strips that test for glucose in the urine, not ketones!! They look similar, so read the pkg.

    thank you all for the advice! i am contacting a vet in sun valley and getting strips on my way home (just in time for a walk!) i'll keep you all posted. thanks again!

    sure thing. she is actually my husbands dog, and we are her 2nd owners (besides the breeder). the family who sold her only had her for 3-4 months, before they decided to move to Utah, so we have had isis since she was 6 months old.

    the breeder is located in Lakeside, ca. I unfortunately don't know the breeders name by heart- but we've contacted her over the years & learned isis's mom died at a young age- but we don't know the cause- which is why i am nervous about Fanconi.

    No matter how today's strip test turns out, you can always submit blood to the U of Mo to have the Linked Marker DNA test run for Fanconi so that you know whether she may develop the disease at some point in her life.

    We had the same problem when Seti was a puppy. It turned out that he had crystals in his bladder due to the food we were giving him (I think it was Wellness brand but not entirely sure). We changed his diet and it went away and has never come back. Hopefully your problem is minor like ours!

    One other note about chest 'dropping' (and why did dog people start using that term - it sort of conjurs up visions of dog parts falling off in the yard) One the the biggest problems in basenjis fronts right now is those that are too narrow and have a concave area between the front legs. I'm NOT advocating a front like a bull terrier but there needs to be some 'fill' there to have a good front but it's not the fill it is the actual structure of the bones in the shoulder and upper arm that - if not correct- actally pull the 'front' too far forward. A quick visual scan from the side - if the deepest part of the brisket is well behind the legs - the front is too far forward. We need to pay attention to the actual shoulder structure to make sure we are not continuing to double up on dogs with a short upper arm. That limits front reach, and creates a not efficient side gait. So go catch your dogs and do a quick check - measure from the top of the wither to the point of shoulder (the most prominant bone in the chest.) then from that point to the point of the elbow. They should be the same. if they are not - stand up your dog and put your hand between the front legs - if you hand is IN FRONT OF THE FRONT LEGS - great - if your hand is between the front legs the front on your dog is too far foward. More than you ever wanted to know probably - LOL

    @ljsabo: My B does the same thing. He will start peeing and not finish and then quickly lick himself. He has done this for years but otherwise seems healthy and very normal. My friend who has a 9 month old b puppy stated hers does this as well so it could be a B thing?? No, he licks the pee as it's coming out and if I turn his head away he stops and walks away.

    I let Dallas sleep in bed with me for the first time this past week & woke up when I felt wetness on my arm. He had peed & was so asleep he didn't wake up until I said "Dallas!" He looked up at me, then licked his penis then looked at me again as if to say "what? did I do that?" Poor pup. I haven't noticed any other signs of anything wrong so I guess sometimes they are just too asleep to wake up…perhaps like kids who are learning not the wet the bed?

    Sometimes Gypsy seems to have seizures in her sleep. Not the kind of movement wherein you guess she's chasing rabbits in her dreams or something. She does that also, but sometimes it looks very much like a seizure. VERY nerve-wracking.
