Excessive urination

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • We've had our basenji, Ninja, since he was 9 weeks old. He is 10 months now. Up until about 2-3 weeks ago he was generally potty trained. He started sneezing a lot over multiple days so we brought him to the vet. The vet determined that Ninja had a bacterial infection in his nose and prescribed an anti-inflammatory and an antibiotic. He mentioned that the anti-inflammatory would cause excessive peeing. Well, it did cause Ninja to drink and pee more than normal and he started to have accidents in the house and even soil his crate nightly. He was only on the meds for 5 days. Since then, the urination issues persisted. He is still having to go pee every 1-3 hours and wets his crate every night. He also drinks it. I plan on bringing him back to the vet this week but someone please help. Has anyone been through something like this? My previously house broken basenji has suddenly reverted back to a bladder control-less invalid dog… Oh and I have called the vet to voice my concerns but he said it may still be the meds...but really, 2 weeks later??

Mine don't drink much either and this has always been very commonn with Basenjis as you know. To encourage mine (who're fed raw) I give them a watery drink after every meal -I do things like mix in a little vegetable water, the rinsings of tins which had contained food of any kind, the rinsings of yoghourt pots and all sorts of tastes and I find that they will drink all of what I give them . In fact when two of mine were staying with friends they were puzzled by the way they just stood waiting after they'd had their meal. They wanted their 'milk shakes' as my friend calls it! I 'm glad to hear that Buddy is doing well and hope he continues to do so.

@ljsabo: My B does the same thing. He will start peeing and not finish and then quickly lick himself. He has done this for years but otherwise seems healthy and very normal. My friend who has a 9 month old b puppy stated hers does this as well so it could be a B thing?? No, he licks the pee as it's coming out and if I turn his head away he stops and walks away.

We had the same problem when Seti was a puppy. It turned out that he had crystals in his bladder due to the food we were giving him (I think it was Wellness brand but not entirely sure). We changed his diet and it went away and has never come back. Hopefully your problem is minor like ours!
