Excessive thirst and urination question-

    Hi all,

    My sweet 2.5 year old basenji has recently begun drinking an excessive amount of water which has led to an excessive amount of urination. After a few days I decided to take her in for testing. The vet did a urinalysis and blood panel. Her specific gravity was low (which makes sense since it is likely diluted) and her platelets were low on her blood panel. He told me to just continue to give her water (even though she is drinking almost 5 cups a day) and see if anything changes. Yesterday she had blood in her stools, so they'd like to put her on an antibiotic for intestinal issues. Can anyone help us here? I realize that excessive thirst is an early sign of fanconi, but there is no glucose in her urine, but want to help this sweet thing.

    Thank you... I wasnt sure about the food, some say too much protein, some say that protein are good for acidic urine... i will loose the vegetables for a fee days (Fred will be happy) and keep treating UTI with antibiotic and D-manoze. Kibble is a problem because he is straching his mouth and ears when eating it, Thatā€™s why we are on raw diet. He eats horse and lamb meat and he likes green peas so that was his main vegetable. I hope the problem was in the peas šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£.. Thank you... we are going tomorrow on x ray to see If there are any Stones...

    The only sounds I can consistently coax out of Jake are the ones where he sounds possessed. Step 1: Flip him on his back Step 2: Tickle/Rub his spine area Step 3: Wait for the demons He'll make other noises when he feels like it but I haven't figured out the "triggers" yet.

    I think that in the future that it would be important to get a blood sample when or just after she is having the episodeā€¦. if it was a plant, critter bite... by now the toxic substance would most likely be gone.

    @ljsabo: My B does the same thing. He will start peeing and not finish and then quickly lick himself. He has done this for years but otherwise seems healthy and very normal. My friend who has a 9 month old b puppy stated hers does this as well so it could be a B thing?? No, he licks the pee as it's coming out and if I turn his head away he stops and walks away.

    Katie is a strange one. The vet taught us how to check for mammary cancer because of the body change, but she's still in the clear. This is the same dog that broke out in hives so bad during her first and only heat, she was put on Methylpredisolone for the duration. The more she licked to keep herself clean, the more hives she got. She was either allergic to herself, or so stressed nerves got the better of her and brought out hive like bumps. Never had a allergy/hives outbreak since. She's a strange one for sure.
