C-Me "1"… Squirrel "0"

Basenji Talk
  • Niiiiiiiiiice! I love the subject line. Liz cleaned up the rabbit fatality we had our first few days in GA. I was actually quite impressed with Zip after I got over the scream the poor thing let out when she grabbed it by the leg. It appeared that she and Riley ate up all the good parts, and neither ended up with any worms.

  • @tanza:

C-Me at 5 months 6 days got her first Squirrel today… Yuk.... and then Franie had to "help".... I was not amused since I have to do the "clean up" ... but that is what they do....

Nice C-Me! Sometimes the squirrels bate the dogs and don't time the tree distance right.

  • That little tri girl… hahaha

I'm happy we don't have much squirrels here.. ;)

  • We are over run with squirrels here…. no rabbits... but more then enough other critters...

  • I only have 1 squirrel here-and he stays away. Now, the birds? About a month ago, I was fishing in Sugar's mouth-again. I won. But the birds weren't in good shape.

  • C-me can come visit anytime and get rid of the bushy-tailed tree rats around here! Mine used to chase them as they ran around the fence-top but alas, none ever fell into the yard for them. Now mine are older, would like the squirrel broiled with a nice marsala sauce, if you please.

    Congrats, C-Me!

  • Good for you C-me! No pictures? I guess it all happens so fast. Moses keeps on getting possum babies, not fair, but hey, I can do it if they are in my yard.

LOL, thanks but I pass on taking pictures of them having a tug-o-war with a half live squirrel…..

  • Tanza, that is a good point…eeeww!

  • Chief only just recently showed any interest in critter activity. Up until yesterday he would just amble along totally clueless as zoe strained at he leash trying to get some squirrel. Then yesterday a squirrel was in our yard and he half heartly chased it. This morning on our walk he was right there with zoe trying to catch a squirrel. I'm happy they havent caught anything yet not looking forward to when it happens.

  • Benny caught a Bunny today… the Bunny was in the garden, it tried to jump out and Benny ran and caught it mid-air. I grabbed Benny's leash, but it was too late for the Bunny :( .

  • :DLove the adventure stories! Our shepherd mix was set free in the pen before our basenji Kismet and there was a squirrel party going on. Poor Kismet missed the fun since the shepherd Gypsy got there first and killed the squirrel before I could release Kismet. Better luck next time! There is no squirrel shortage here and they clean my bird feeders. I am sure the red tailed hawk likes a nice easy meal too!

  • our garden is loaded with fieldmouses at the moment…. my B's do not care very much but my Ibizan hounds snack them all the time, sometimes they bring one inside for me to have, as a present, and they look quite offended when they notice I throw their delicious present in the garbage can ....

@ibi_n_sane: I think your dogs are giving you a silent hint to change their food into BARF ;-) I would not worry about the squirrels, frankly if they were in good shape of body and mind they would not be caught by a basenji ;-) That's what worries me!

She-Ra helps clean off the Peanut Butter knife (held so she won't cut herself (even though it's a butter knife I've heard stories)) when I'm done with it. Gonna have to try the mashed potato beater this Thanksgiving (it's her first…she's seen this big bird in the fridge but can't quite figure out what to do about it! :) ).

Are you kidding I can't get my Abby to stop. She does it everytime someone comes up the stairs from the basement or my husband will hold his arms out like he is going to grab her and she will tilt her ears all the way back and let out a big barooooooooooo!

I used to say my dog was aggressive until I read this thread… Now I say it is more of a defensive mechanism for Buddi. Buddi doesn't like anyone or anything to approach him. He wants to smell and get to know them or it first. If someone new comes into the house I tell them not to acknowledge Buddi at first and then once he has finished getting to know them he will walk away. After that he is fine. But if someone walks in and puts their hand towards him he instantly turns into a very loud and shows aggressive behavior like he is going to attack. The theory has worked very well to date. With dogs it is a little different. He also doesnt like small dogs. The ones close to his size or larger we have never had a problem. Should I handle the situations in a different manner? Also he doesnt go to a doggie spa or day care so we make sure to go to the park and keep him socialized with dogs there and ones that he knows. We also have friends with young kids and he loves them. Has never growled or snipped at them. He LOVES to play!!!!

@etzbseder: Luckily, at my parents house, their dog has put smudges all over that door, and Medjai just scratches at it when he wants in. (I know I shouldn't reward it, but he wants in). I had Medjai yelp once when jumping off the bed, which is strange because he likes to sit on my shoulders and has jumped off there to chase animals without a problem. Keoki scratches when he wants in – started when we taught him to ring bells that were hanging, but the bells have disappeared "literally", so now he just scratches. Drives my husband crazy, but hey! Jazzy just sits quietly and winds up staying outside far longer than she wants to because I don't know she wants in. Keoki jumps up and scratches loudly.. guess who gets first?
