Otis, Moses and Luna got out…

Basenji Talk
  • Otis did get hit by a car when he was barely 5 months old..went flying through the air and landed like a sack of potatoes..We rushed him to the vet and he ended up being Ok, pulmonary contusion and very scared, but Ok..Vet said it is a wonder he was a puppy, very limber and thinks that is why he didn't break any legs or else.
So yes, next time we won't be so lucky, we can not have a next time.

Not the gate is locked as it usually is, and I will not let anybody open it again when it is wet and swollen, because that makes it impossible to lock..

  • A couple of years ago my neighbor calls me & tells me my dog is loose in his back yard. I look outside the gate was left open!

I panicked, put the phone down, ran over to his yard, the dog was nowhere to be seen, I run back to the phone and the dog is standing right behind me in the kitchen !

    He snuck back!

  • such smart dogs..

  • Your stories about them coming back are great to read - I live in fear of mine escaping and just running off forever - so glad Otis knows where his mommy is!

  • I'm so pleased that all ended well. We have always worried that somebody will leave our gates open and this has happened once or twice particularly when the family lived at home. We now have a double gate system with warnings on both gates which works very well. Occasianally somebody doesn't quite latch the inner gate but no worry if the outer one is closed.

  • I put a pad lock on my gate.

Sorry I have to laugh at this one.:D

OK, many years ago in 1980 I moved into a house with my first Basenji Nipper with 2 other guys. One day the landlady, who lived next door called me at work (45 minute to 1 hour drive away) that Nipper had got out of the yard and was just sitting in the driveway. I got home at the end of the day and that dog was just sitting there waiting for me, she didn't move out of that driveway. Amazing dog she was!

  • my two got out one day through a rain swollen gate chasing a squirrel. It was before work and I was home. I realized it within minutes of them getting out. I closed and locked the gate, then went walking around the neighborhood calling for them. I had made a full circuit, starting to panic, I was going to start again from my house where I found both my guys standing on the front steps hugged up against the front door with a miserable look on their faces, please let us in its RAINING out here. I just opened the door and they ran back inside.

  • I too have padlocks on my gates and the lock is inside the fence…

  • GenJMar, I am glad they realized their mistake in running out while iot rained..;)

The gate is locked and secure now they are stuck on the inside.

It is very hard for me to get Otis to come inside when I am about to run errands or just leave to go get my daughter from school..he loves to be outside, even if it is cold and he is shivering. So I bribe him with treats and in he comes, but the minute the door closes behind him he goes nuts, trying to get back out..Silly boy.

Thank you Suzee. They had fun with the squirrel after they found it. I like watching that Python Hunters show that is on OLN about the invasive species of snakes in FL. It is a good show and it does show us how we have disrupted the ecosystem by introducing non native species to different parts of the world. I have not seen a squirrel in the yard for a couple of weeks now, it's great! Once I get the rest of the acreage fenced in they can go into the back pasture and hunt mice through the grass. We don't have a lot of rabbits out here but in the summer time I will take pics of their new place to run!

I would think the hair will grow back - it soundsa sthough you separated them easily before major damage was done. These things do happen and it pays to keep an eye on your dog even when having a chat.

I am so sorry that Maya was attacked. I am fed up with people who let their dogs off the lead when they obviously shouldn't be. I avoid places where I am likely to encounter other dogs, you would not believe the goings on re-dogs at the country park it almost makes you feel ashamed to be a dog owner. You are lucky Maya coped so well. Fiji was bitten by a Rhodesian Ridgeback when she was a puppy and she is now terrified of bigger dogs.

It was just the initial greeting that was off right? Dogs do forget certain cues sometimes…she obviously remembered you...but it might have freaked her out if you crawled up to her kennel, particularly if that wasn't something that you normally do. Imagine this...if my husband was gone for a long time, and he didn't tell me he was going to come home while I was sleeping, and creep up to the bed...it wouldn't matter how nicely he was talking to me, I would be SCARED by his unusual behavior, and his unexpected arrival. Next time you arrive home, try just walking in like you normally do and say Hi Sheba (and puppy) like you normally do, and I bet she will be overjoyed. We have to remember that dog brains work differently than ours in a lot of ways. If we try to think of them just like people, we usually end up getting our feelings hurt :) Hey, and thanks for serving our country! Stay safe!

Having your Basenjis get used to crates by riding does help…in the long run.. the start besides things like feeding them in the crate... to associate the crate with fun times.... and when you are at an event... the crate becomes as safe haven... and a place to crash... at our lure trial in March... Kobey was there.. I always have crates in my van... and with so much activity going on... Kobey was very happy to be in the crate and taking a nap....
