We almost lost Buana last night

  • puh, I started hyperventilating while I read that….. you are very lucky that everything went ok with Buana! Good to have such books around...

    Regards,
    Esther

  • Oh lord, that was intense reading! Gizmo too choked once, but on food. Heimlich worked for me, boy am I glad you had that medical book!

What kind of bone was it?

For Gizmo it was "back on the horse", and he actually was far more careful after. I can imagine it would be the same way with Buana.

I am so happy everything ended well!

  • Oh my… That's so scary.. We had the same thing a week ago with Tillo.. Also did the hindlegs thing, works great! BF said: What are you doing?! Ggg.. Tillo was very impressed by all of it..

Glad Bu'tje is ok now :)

It was a rawhide, we always have some rawhide bones lying around the house so the dogs can chew on it when they want to..
Glad that heimlick worked for you, it's very scary to be in such a situation…

    @ Janneke:
I think the boys are just too fanatic or someting...

  • How scary!!! Sadly, I have ruled out most chew toys for my dogs, because I am paranoid of something like that happening.

I am so glad he is okay.

  • Oh my…it was my fastest reading. I am glad Buana is okay.
It has never happened to us. At the most they scream out when get down a big piece of bone, but that is all

  • Wow! Great quick thinking! You and Kas are heroes for saving your boy.

Regarding rawhides, I stopped keeping them around last time AJ got sick from eating one. The only chews he gets now are natural beef bones. He has a rib bone I gave him from a bbq dinner about 6 months ago and a sterilized femur segment stuffed with fake peanut butter. He'll chew on them for a while and lose them in his bed. Then he gets all excited when they turn up again, like "Is it my birthday?"

  • Oh my goodness! That was quite a scare!! I'm glad everything turned out okay. I wonder what your other two dogs thought as Buana was being swung by his hind legs.

  • Kim I am so sorry this happen. So very happy that you had the medical book and could save Buana. I know that was bad for all of you. Give Buana a big hug from us here in Kansas tell him we also think he is special. I hope all of you have a good day please keep us todate on how he is feeling.

  • Wow Kim & Kaz! That is so scary, I'm happy that Buana is now ok. That is my worst fear.

  • it was scary just reading that! i'm glad he's okay.

  • First Basenji's

I agree, just reading it was scary. Thank goodness for your quick thinking! I'm glad he is alright.

  • Thanks all for you kind words :)

Thanks so much, I will hug him :)

He was eating fine and as far as I can check, his whole body is oke…

    Emergency procedures for dogs

  • Wow, scary stuff. Very happy to hear Buana is alright. :)

I'm also glad to have come across that procedure. This is something we should all know in the back of our minds. Thanks for the link Pat. :D

  • I used to give those rawhide chews to my last 2 Bs in the 90s but stopped as they get into small pcs and they would try to swallow them and then start gagging. No chews, no pigs ears, no hooves and no bones. They break into small pcs and if you are not there it's too dangerous. It's a good thing you were there!

Sterilized Beef Bones. They are quite durable. Kananga has 4, yes 4, laying around whenever he needs something to chew on. These things can be thrown at a brick wall and they'd probably stay intact. I don't even bother filling them with anything. He prefers his unfilled Kong. :o

  • Thanks so much Pat, I think this is very usefull for everybody that ownes a dog or a cat!

Even if you know in your head what you supposed to do, It's great to have this to check beause when someting happens you just sometimes don't know how to react…

All the update from her owners was on FB… she is out of surgery and the leg repair was great... she is doing well and will go home with Karla tomorrow afternoon! And yes, I would have posted sooner, but seems the site was down for a bit this morning

Late to the party…as always. But my boy does that just about every other night. He is quite vocal...in his sleep, and even while awake. He is far more vocal than my previous fella. He sometimes wakes me up with his noises. Yes, he wil growl, whine, and howl/yodel in his sleep. Welcome to my world!

Kona looked around at this video. Some of the other ones on YouTube really get her excited, this one was more curiosity than anything else. It is amazing how basenji's sound so different….Kona's noises are sometimes almost inaudible. For example, if we are talking to our neighbors outside and she is on the leash she will baroo to try and get them to play with her and 3/4 of the time they never hear her!! We hear her every time, but then again she is our baby! :)

@BlueBell: She has gone to the vet to receive her shots but after doing some research wonder if dogs are being over vaccinated. Here in Jackson, TN our shots are yearly. They don't offer any 3 year shots. This may be the downside of living in a smaller city. Up to this point she has not been boarded and except for spending time once a month with her basenji cousins she is not around many other dogs. We don't have a dog park. This is why I would question needing a Bordatella every 6 months. It is the same shot as the one they gave for one year, just good for three. The standard now and has been for a few years (around here at least 6 or more) that they are covered for 3yr. Do some on line reseach about the recommendations and take them to your Vet…. you can start with Dr. Dodds... I think that you will find that most Vets are up to speed with the latest research and if not, they should learn...IMO.... and it might be a battle, but it is your dog... And unless you are going to board in a kennel facility, I would not even bother with Bordatella.. only protects on like 3 to 5 stains and there are hundreds.... I show mine all over and have not used Bordatella for over 15+ yrs.
