Wondering if they're really basenji mix..

Basenji Talk
  • @DebraDownSouth:

Okay I have to say every time I look at this thread, I cannot believe the 2 black puppies with black heads turned into the grown dogs. LOL are you SURE that is the right puppy picture?

I know…I was confused at first, like why did she post a pic of these puppies....that is one of the things that made me think of GSDs...they are often born with heavy black masking all over, that fades as they mature.

  • Oh I'm sure those are the same dogs : ) Theia was nearly completely black. Just wanted you all to see how adorable they were when they were babies. The only tentative picture I have of the dad is a really close up picture of his head. I've attached it but am not sure whether or not it is helpful.

  • Andrea that makes sense, and the middle pic, yep does look very gsd.

  • Thank you for posting the picture of Dad. In my opinion he is certainly not a pure Basenji. No matter they are still very charming dogs and I'm sure you love them.

  • The noises they make are unique & unforgettable! My Nala baroos for my husband almost every evening when he comes home. She has graced my only a handful of times. She has barked twice, to my knowledge. It is my understanding that Basenji's do bark. When the breed was being perfected in Africa for hunting, the hunters chose to breed the dogs that barked the least until they got what we have today. I am by no means an expert. I just read that about them… :)

  • I shouldn't say they do bark. I should say they are able to bark.

I would probably disagree with that theory. I have read that their vocal chords are shaped differently, so when they do bark…it is more of a singular "boof"...instead of a "woof, woof, woof". This is pretty typical of primitive type dogs. I doubt that Africans spent much time selectively breeding dogs that don't bark...in that situation, if you were going to select for anything, it would be effective hunting...barking wouldn't really matter, in fact it would probably make it easier to find/follow them in the jungle.

  • I totally agree with Andrea. Basenjis have a different shaped voice box to many other dogs and it's most unlikely that they are barkless by selection. In my opiinon which is also the opinion of others they are descendants of a barkless animal.

There has so much been written about Basenjis but it is not all accurate.

  • I truly would wonder about any really barking basenji… I'd like a dna test on that, lol.

That said, Cara boofs a lot. A whole lot. She likes to boof. Boof.................. boof......... boof. It is almost like she is trying to teach the neighbors barking dogs that they do it WRONG with that woofwoofwoof nonsense. :)

Ditto on breed selection for not barking... probably not.

  • Okay, I didn't mean to offend anyone. Nala has let out a "bark like" noise once or twice. 1 noise. Not a woofwoofwoof… I don't think she spelled it with a "w" or a "b". I read the selective breeding thing somewhere on the internet. I'm sure we here in the USA are not the only ones to breed for certain characteristics. I'm also pretty sure it wasn't just for the noises. Unlike hunting here with Braking & baying dogs, the game there is quite different. I just wanted to share something I read. Didn't intend to start a debate or argument. I'm a little sorry I shared at all

I think you might have misread my tone :) I wasn't arguing. I have read that info as well…but there is a lot of conflicting info out there about Basenjis. And I just wanted to provide you with more/different info. I didn't mean my comments to be in regard to your dogs at all....they definitely could woof, or boof and be part Basenji.

Don't be sorry you shared :)

  • My Magnum will bark when amazingly startled. One bark. In the 6 years he's been with us, we've heard it about a half dozen times…startled us more than him. I don't think he likes to (maybe it hurts?)...maybe he feels it's unseemly :D, but he can and will bark if he feels the need. I am completely sure he's purely bred.

I need to do some research on the differently-shaped voice box. I've only heard tell of it, haven't seen the physicality of their voice box as compared to other breeds.

One of the reference books has a diagram…but I can't remember which one. Quite a few of mine have done a alarm bark. And I have definitely heard of (and experienced) a basenji that lives with barking dogs is more likely to "boof...boof.....boof"

  • Antialoops - like Andrea I was only passing on information - it was a good question. I hope I didn't sound corrective - I certainly didn't mean to!

It is an interesting debate and there is quite a lot written about the Basenji that isn't entirely accurate. Feeling about Basenjis and their origins as I do I'm always interested in other's opinions and thoughts. My apologies if I sounded otherwise

Keep posting. It's interesting to hear and see the pictures of your dogs and their characteristics.

  • Thanks for all the info! I'm positive Nala is pure bred. No papers and she is my favorite breed (rescued, that is). Her physical appearance - 16" x 16", 22.4lbs., wrinked little forehead, tri color, & her distinct noises… no mistaking that! I thought I posted her picture... I'm actually her third person... She was in the pound here twice! The first family that adopted her gave her away & she ran away from those people as well. he was definitely a handful when I got her but she & I have an understanding now. LOL I wouldn't have her any other way! Understand, it doesn't matter to me if she's "pure" or not. I love her & she accepts me. I could go on for hours... :) To "Quercus": Sorry, I must remember not to read "attitude" into a typed message. I guess I was facing a difficult day... So sorry, thanks for replying! :)

I do have a small pic of her with her big brother Moose. Hope ou can see it clearly. There's no mistaking she's a Basenji. I've wanted a Basenji sinceI was about 12! I got her 2 yars ago, some 48 years later & she is everything & more than I hoped for!

  • The picture was missing! Hope you manage to post it again, I'm very interested.

You've certainly held on to your childhood dream! I'm really happy for you.

  • I keep getting an error message but I'll try again! Thanks for asking! I do love talking about them & showing them off! I'll try to start an album…

I recently got a Basenji mix. I am not sure exactly what she is mixed with though. She is about 40lbs, but looks almost 100% Basenji. She is very powerful and a little broad chested. I am lucky with her though. She exhibits all the great characteristics of a Basenji, but almost none of the bad ones. :)

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

Oh WOW, you guys are sooooo helpful. Thanks DDS for the link, that was especially helpful. I'm just intrigued with this breed for some reason, and I'm not sure why. Reading what all of you have to say is better that the typical things that you read on the computer. They all just repeat the same thing over and over where as all of you can give me personal experiances. I know all puppies are a lot of hard work, but compared to other dog (which I see some of you have had other breeds) are they actually a lot tougher? All pups like to chew and get into trouble but are they especially hard to train. Lets say with housebreaking and such? Oh and for all of you that have cats too, do they stay out of the kitty box or are the prone to make there way there, if you catch what I'm saying. I read they they are very clean and often times will clean themselves like a cat does. Really? And they are aloof like cats? Soooo much info and I would rather hear all of this from you than get false info. HELP!!
