    Our 14 year old Suni died in April. We decided no more dogs. It was so hard to send her to doggie haven. Our house felt so empty. Two month later we knew, we had to start looking for another dog. We found Brat on the web and got in contact with Sharon Hurlbut. There were no basenji's available in the North West. We live in WA state. Then Sharon found a basenji in Idaho Falls in a Kennel. She was anxious to get her out of there. We were going on a trip to see grandkids and decided to make a detour to Idaho. We just feel in love with her. The poor thing had been adopted 3 times before in her five years. She has a good home now. We don't know much about her history. So far she gets along with most dogs. We think she misses the other kennel dogs. We have a dog park here and take her there at least 3 times a day. We have to thank Sharon for finding Laika for us.

    So far she is doing really well. We are taking her to her first Vet visit. Will let you know more later. She has a big scar on her left front leg. I would like to know more about her history. The last person was a man, and he had her for a few years. She seems to be bonding with Jack more.

    Well, if you want to win her over, you start feeding her, giving her treats and doing all the "fun" things a new b likes.
    You can even hand feed her..it does help the bonding.
    Sorry about her leg…some of these poor b's have sure been banged around.
    Glad you got her and not someone who was thinking b's are like ****ers or labs...

    We just got back from the Vet with Laika. She is in great health. Her teeth need cleaning, that is all. She has a 3 inch surgery scar on her left front leg.
    Dr. Renee could not find any information in the few papers that came with her. The last male owner had her for 3 years. That is why she bonded with Jack right away.

    I am glad she is in good health. You will have many years with her. But if I were you, I would do the fanconi cheek swab, just so you know what to expect in the future.

    We have another appointment next month and we will talk to Dr. Renee about the fanconi test.
    Laika has had very little traing. We use a Flexy for walking right now. I would like to get her trained on a short leash later, so we could take her out in public. Is it possible?? Suni would try to attack any dog.

    @abonnard Pee pads got me through in the end, she would pee every 20 mins for the first months, then 40 mins, then she suddenly went to being able to hold it for many hours. One of the best purchases I got before she arrived was a small carpet washer, saved my sanity. The cleanup is so key otherwise they go back to the same spot.

    @julia87 How much do you know about Basenjis? Have you met any? It's highly recommended to learn as much as possible about them before making a decision to acquire one. This would be a good place to start.

    @msjames, @tanza did you a solid favor outlining expectations. Networking really is key to finding a "reputable" breeder. Most show their dogs and are connected to other breeders through showing. They all seem to know who is planning a litter and who isn't. I completely agree with Pat that you should meet your breeder in person prior to the puppies even being born. You can learn a lot. Is a Basenji right for you? If you want a dog to hang with you in the driveway with the garage door open as you chat with neighbors, or stand calmly with the front door open as you receive a UPS package... ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Basenjis will bolt. they'll be gone in a second. They see it. They chase it. And if you think you have them trained... no. They've trained you. When they see it they will chase it. Basenjis, in my experience, need exercise. Mine get two walks a day. When they don't, they can be destructive. They're not shy about expressing frustration or displeasure through chewing up your best stuff. A big secure yard can mitigate this, but that's not a guarantee. They love seeing outside, so keep your blinds and drapes open otherwise they may open them themselves even if that requires chewing through them. They will climb onto windowsills, tables and low counter tops. They are capable of scaling a six-foot fence. They are known to climb trees. These are extreme examples, but better to know now. They are super affectionate. They can be trained... to a point. They are clowns and provide endless entertainment. A Basenji baroo is the best sound ever! They love to snuggle and will sleep on your bed and under the spreads and sheets if you let them. They love to share body heat. Tail twitches when I return home are the best!

    thanks! they love to rest on the sun, is my basenji garden, they can go in/out all day at their pleasure using a little doggie door. Even when im not at home, so they can take the sun and get some fresh inside the house. :-)

    Laika sounds like a lucky girl! A suggestion: Check at your vet's office and see if any of the vet techs will do house/dog sitting. We've found that our fur-kids are much more comfortable in their own home and with their own routine if we have to be away. Lots less stress for them. The other advantage is that they are usually familiar with the techs and you know that if anything should go wrong you have a direct connection with your vet. Yodels to Laika! Terry
