Top USA Breeders?

Breeder Talk
  • With the risk of causing some trouble, I'm interested in what the "top" breeders are in USA, and with top I mean a breeder that has several Bs that have done really well in shows, or that have an exceptionally great personality.

Hope this question, nor potential replies will offend anyone…

  • I think its a good question…shouldn't offend anyone. Sadly, I don't know.

  • Done well in the US or done well across the many ponds? And I assume you mean breed only - not performance? Done well in US I would say: Eldorado, Adventureland, Jasiri/Sukari to name a few that have multiple Group winners
or Best In Show winners in the past year or so. As for temperamant - I can not say have not met any of their top dogs in person. Perhaps if you could clarify what exaclty you are looking for in the query - we could hone in better on a reply.

And then more of present day breeders is Klassic, Kazor, Sonbar, Arubmec, Signet, Taji, Platimum, Ankhu, Jokuba, Zuri (although they have not been breeding much recently)

Advertureland in the dog's name would be seen as AB.

  • Thank you for your replies! Now an entirely different question that I maybe should make a new thread for, but that I feel some of you might still be able to find and answer here:

Do you know of plans to import from Congo in the future and how to get in contact with the right people to take part in such an adventure?

  • Email me privately and I can hook you up with some contacts. sinbaje@comcast.net

Interesting. Our Shaun is the product of two of the breeders on your list: Taji and Platinum. Both Katie and MaryK have really impressed us with their program, long term devotion to the breed, great communication, and above all their wonderful dogs…

Add Meisterhaus to this list :)

I assume you mean for next winter's litters ? Nothing available at all right now - all this winter's crop will have been promised long since and be leaving the nest soon if they aren't already resettled. However, if you email me (see signature block - email addresses are on the websites) I will send you a list of Breed Club secretaries.

@cheryl-goodman - Have you talked to your girl's breeder? Have you completed all health testing and recorded it with www.offa.org as public record, especially DNA testing for Fanconi and PRA? Have you done any showing or performance events with your girl?

Exactly– responsible small breeders will be shut down and puppymillers flourish if we don't.

@Quercus: exactly…the term that you hear most often is for the breeding to "get the money back I spent on the dog" as if a pet were an investment!! ugh... A pet is an investment…. although your returns are in the companionship and affection you receive :D Similar to the way a car is an investment. As soon as you drive it off the lot, it loses much of its value to others (depreciates) & although it provides a service, costs you time, money, upkeep & maintenance for around a decade. But on a more serious note, I like this chart a lot. I do think its a great reference for those who aren't sure what differentiates good breeders from less reputable breeders, even if some of the lines between two different categories could blur or overlap.

@Nemo: Here's the link. http://www.basenji.org/learn/ Go to "screening breeders" at the top. That is a great list…and great explanations of why those questions are important.

@khanis: Not polished ??? Sorry, but that is one of the silliest things that I have heard in ages. **I'm sorry; to what is this referring? I have seen dogs that are uglier than sin.. in the show ring no less! People that can't breed a decent looking domestic basenji aren't going to be able to breed a decent looking African basenji! **Uglier than sin? Really? I really prefer health and temperament and function as breeding goals. IMHO. How is that for a bunch of African beauties??? **Your dogs are quite lovely. So are my two Jasiri-Sukari B's. But neither would win in a show. We think they're beautiful, too. And they both have sweet temperaments. Lucky us. :) s.
