Beggin Strips?

  • Sometimes I buy string cheese as you can cut that up just like Carrie said about hot dogs. The individually packaged kind is nice for travelling (and nice for a snack for me too on the road. ;)). Once you figure out what your dog likes, it's good to have a variety around the house…some they REALLY REALLY like and others they like okay. I find it helps with training depending on the situation.

  • I just tried the oven made chicken jerky somebody recommended… DISGUSTING! (had to taste one for myself after spending all that time prepping it haha :) ), but the girls LOVED them!! Did any command I asked instantly!

Really? I found it kind of bland, but not horrible. Hard and crunchy, not quite the right texture for chicken in my book, but not horrible.

I'm not a huge fan of chicken to begin with, so nothing about it appealed to me really. But I was also the kid who had to touch the stovetop even after mom said "Don't touch! You'll hurt yourself!" I've got to prove things to myself….

YUCK! The only time we had BS in our house, the basenji refused to eat it adn it even took several tries to get the lab (described as walking stomach) to eat them. But my current pups do like raw fresh grown zucchinis.

  • I actually steamed brussel sprouts & green beans together with my dinner last night & poured the resulting veggie flavored water onto Lola & Callie's dinner. They didn't seem to mind a bit, but I don't know how much it actually tasted like brussel sprouts…

  • We can't keep brussel sprouts in stock at our house. She likes the little nasty bitter ones that would make people gag. She's never met a veggie or bean she didn't like but why brussel sprouts????

Cat poop is a delicacy to them, so go figure.

@eeeefarm said in Wet weather exercise: @elbrant said in Wet weather exercise: I wish I could take the credit for Doodle. But she was trained and taught before I brought her home. If she is still reliable you can take credit for that. So many times a well trained animal goes to a new home and within months the good manners and training evaporates. Seen it many, many times with horses, not quite so often with dogs but they don't tend to change hands so often. Unfortunately people often reinforce bad behaviour without being aware of what they are doing, and then complain because the "stupid" animal has developed bad habits! I concur. If it isn't maintained, then behaviors erode.

I know too many puppies and dogs injured or killed due to collars left on unattended. Not worth the risk.

@zande - You bet! We must be showing our ages! Or Been There/Done That! Very few times we disagree, but when we do we respect the others point of view!

@jkent I have certainly never even heard that advice and would not have taken it if I had. It depends on the conditions underfoot, the breed, the size of the puppy (some breeds have very large ones !), off leash or regimented walking, stopping to admire the view / watch the puppy socialise with dogs he/she meets. SO many things to take into consideration. I wouldn't pay much attention to generic advice from the KC. Our breed is 'different' !

@creambasenji said in New Puppy Advice: She's 9 months and 8.5 pounds. Doesn't seem she will be getting any bigger This must be a typo. 9 months or 9 weeks? At any rate, I'd love to see a picture of a cream Basenji, toy or not.
