Can't Handle the Cuteness

Basenji Talk
  • I've come to the conclusion that Paco is just too darned cute for me. I don't know if I can handle this level of cuteness…seriously, it should be illegal.

First, there was him getting his head stuck in the lattice on his first day home with us. Less than five hours home, and he's already making us cut holes into the barriers we put up for him...I suspect he planned the whole thing so that he could try to get out again later when we weren't looking.

Then, when he was begging for food one night during dinner, we ignored him. We had just fed him, some food was still in his bowl, so we just acted as if he weren't there. He went into the kitchen, picked up a bit of the dry food in his mouth, brought it into the room we were eating in, dropped the food on the floor, then sat down facing us and joined us for dinner.

And THEN, the magic puppy trick; after five hours of being away from home with Paco in the crate, I come home to find that he had left me a puddle to clean up...OUTSIDE the crate!

I knew these guys were smart, but seriously...it's gotten to the point that last night, he was keeping me company in the kitchen while I washed dishes, but to keep him out of trouble I had him on a tied leash. He wrapped the leash around the table leg, looked at me, and then circled around once more to tangle himself up some more. I actually had to wonder...was he really unaware that he was tying himself up, or was he hoping that I would not only give him attention by unwrapping him, but also unleash him alltogether? Hmmmmm....

And now, a picture from whe my brother puppy-sat for us. :)

  • They are smart pups. If you don't keep a collar on them indoors (like I do) they are also very sneaky. :D

  • Sounds like you are having great fun with your Pup

  • Paco is very cute - and if you think you have seen sneakiness so far - you ain't seen nothin' yet!

  • Chris has already learned to be suspicious of silence. Last night, we were lying on the bed, and I could see Paco on the floor asleep on his pillow. I guess Chris was dozing, because he suddenly sat up and said "Where is Paco?!?!" really loud…even woke Paco up! I said "sssh! He WAS sleeping!"

Chris "Oh, sorry....it was just so quiet..."

Yes, basenji puppies are that cute so we don't kill them when they're oh so naughty. We all face this problem.

  • He s so cute but what is it they say the best is yet to come have fun.

  • He is crazy adorable. The best part is, they pay attention to what makes you laugh, and will hang on to that trick for later (when you need a laugh).

  • And they get frustrated if they can't please you! I've given up on trying to teach him to "speak" on command so that when people ask to hear his yodel I can have him peform…he just doesn't want to speak, and gets upset when he can't figure out what I want from him.

I'm happy with my quiet puppy :D

  • Yes, he is adorable..they are addictive aren't they?

I had nose surgery a few months ago and when I got home I was worried the dogs would be so excited and jump all on me, but it was crazy how mild mannered and dare I say tame/domesticated they were. I swear they knew I was hurt and gave me a day or so of good behavior. They are truly great dogs to own!

@sharronhurlbut: My basenji girl always shows me up. When I am walking the dogs, folks come over and say "oh, are those the barkless dogs?" My girl ALWAYS gives one of her warning BARKS when they say this. Laugh. I tell the folks yes, they are barkless, except for my girl! So, then discussion starts, and I explain how they are not MUTE. But my girl gets me everytime! That's so funny considering we have the opposite experience. Manny baroooos like crazy at home but when we're in public and we want him to do it, he doesnt. Go figure. They have a mind of their own.

Another favorite but to be used sparingly… laser pens. All my dogs love them and the cat (if the dogs would let him) would chase it for hours. But the papillion goes a bit neurotic while playing and that just gets our B- rilled up (it stops looking so much like play and more like dominance behaviors) so it's rarely (if ever) brought out.
  • I don't own a basenji, but I'm looking for info…

Oh WOW, you guys are sooooo helpful. Thanks DDS for the link, that was especially helpful. I'm just intrigued with this breed for some reason, and I'm not sure why. Reading what all of you have to say is better that the typical things that you read on the computer. They all just repeat the same thing over and over where as all of you can give me personal experiances. I know all puppies are a lot of hard work, but compared to other dog (which I see some of you have had other breeds) are they actually a lot tougher? All pups like to chew and get into trouble but are they especially hard to train. Lets say with housebreaking and such? Oh and for all of you that have cats too, do they stay out of the kitty box or are the prone to make there way there, if you catch what I'm saying. I read they they are very clean and often times will clean themselves like a cat does. Really? And they are aloof like cats? Soooo much info and I would rather hear all of this from you than get false info. HELP!!
