Everyone should register their dogs, that is the way that people can keep track of pedigrees and offspring… I think it is very important regardless if a show dog, one you might breed, or family pet...
And the dam is on Sally pedigree site, she had 3 registered offspring from 2005. She is not DNA test for Fanconi. So you really should at least have her DNA'ed for Fanconi, it is well worth the 65.00 for some peace of mind.

Are all vets familiar with the testing? Should I call the breeder and ask to see what they say? They were clear with my boys that she not be bred. They marked the limited liability box on the AKC papers. She has an unbilical hernia and I thought that was the reason - my reading indicated that it is hereditary.

To add to what Pat said about registration, if you want to do any activities such as lure coursing, you'll need the AKC number. It's cheaper to do it now then waiting to do it later.

When does lure training begin? It sound like fun- I will pursue the AKC registration. I am trying to make sure that a Basenji (or any dog) will be suitable for us- My husband and I were not thrilled with our Christmas surprise! My daughter (14) was ecstatic!!! Our puppy is adorable and she is hard not to like but we are still wrestling with the long term commitment! I have tried to post pictures but I received an error message!
You have to wait till she is a year old to compete but you can do a few short puppy runs with her before then. We have a lure coursing fundraiser in May that would be perfect for that. The course is fenced and very simple.

Most all 90% of Basenjis have umbilical hernia's… is it NOT a big deal in the breed (regardless of what Vets may say if they are not familar with the breed). Again, umbilical hernia's are not a problem in 99.9% of the Basenjis that have them. So that would never be a reason not to bred them.
Fanconi testing is NOT done by a Vet, it is a cheek swab DNA test that you do and send it. Please go to www.basenjihealth.org and read about it and how it is done. No bother to call the breeder, obviously they are not interested in testing for Fanconi or they would have done this before breeding. So again I would urge you to do the cheek swab DNA test and find out her status for your own peace of mind. And if she turns out the test "affected" you will know that by age 3 you will need to start strip testing her urine monthly for spilling sugar.

Most vets are not aware of the DNA test for Fanconi unless they have a basenji owner in their practice who has informed them of the test. You do not go through your vet's office for the test. You order it directly from the OFA website, https://secure.offa.org/cart.html, scroll down to the Fanconi test. The kit arrives with instructions on how to swab your dog and prepare the sample.

And to add to this, a responsible breeder would have never let a puppy be placed in a home as a "surprise" present. This is someone that was only interested in the money for the puppy, not the home and if it was the right, forever home, for that puppy. Responsible breeder screen potential homes to make sure it is the right placement, as we hope that they are for life. I can certainly understand you and your husband "not" being thrilled….and you are so right, it is a long term committment
Welcome to the group. Can't wait to see pictures. I understand how you can be hesitant. I also understand how easy it is to fall in love with your new basenji pup. My puppy started puppy class too (very difficult for me, but very fun for my basenji).

I do not know why my son chose the Basenji. He has allergies and I think he googled Hypo-allergenic dog! I found someone in our neighborhood that has an older Basenji! She is very interesting and unlike any breed I have ever owned. Funny- although she enjoys sitting with you, she does not crave it and is happy being by herself sitting in the sun. She is too young to leave unattended and I find that I need to crate her often because she is not content playing in the same vicinity as I.

That is because a Basenji is an independent thinking hound. They want things on their terms or "what's in it for me"…

yea, I have 3 curly tails, tonight they are opting to snooze closer to the fire than sit by me. Zest enjoys watching football with her dad, but other tv, she'd rather sit by me (well, unless there's a fire in the fireplace). Funny little creatures.

LOL! That is funny. Sometimes, I feel like I'm the one getting shown. :rolleyes: Actually what Nicole meant was that Clay (me, human) will be showing Zoni (crazy little black & white basenji girl) on that Saturday along with several other people. The time we are actually in the ring won't be posted for another couple of days. I'll post it when it is available. If you miss the initial ring time, there will also be a basenji in both the Amateur-Owner-Handler Hound Group and the regular Hound Group competition later in the day too. The unique thing about this show is that it is benched, so even if you aren't around when we are in the show ring, all of the dogs will be on "display" during the rest of the time. You'll be able to meet and greet a lot of different breeds so I think it might be a lot of fun. Benching ends at 4:00, I think. There will be about 5 basenjis in the benching area, l believe. This will be my first (and probably my last :rolleyes:) benched show. Hope to see you there!

My personal experience with an underground fence is that they are a waste of money with basenjis. If there is nothing around to chase she might stay in the yard but as soon as your back is turned if she sees a rabbit, squirrel, cat, another dog or even a leaf blowing the chase will be on. Basenjis can stray 5 - 10 miles in minutes. Many die by being run over by motor vehicles.
