  • Well, G has no double coat, but I do see the similarities with both the Malinois and the Husky looks. The part of the husky description that sounds the most like G is: "This is a high energy dog, especially when young. Good with children and friendly with strangers, they are not watchdogs, for they bark little and love everyone." But I don't think Huskies are as smart or trainable as G. the B description, however, is G to a T: "The Basenji is a dog requiring commitment of an owner. It's alert, very intelligent and independent. This short-haired dog has no bark but is able to produce plenty of other sounds that may make the owner (and neighbors) wish it did bark. Easily bored they will find their own entertainment to the owners displeasure. Not unlike a goat they will eat and chow on just about anything. They love freedom and the "hunt" and should not be left off leash unless securely confined in a fenced yard or enclosure. Plenty of exercise. Basenjis love to be a part of the family. They can get along with other dogs and cats (keep a close eye on them until they adjust). Don't, however, intend to raise rabbits or other small mammals that may rekindle their hunting instincts." Too, too true! I'm well aware to the rabbit issue, and as for the goat comparison, I came home today to a destroyed cardboard box (not a problem) and chewed window sills. Well, who put those window sills right at her level anyway?
    Thanks for all your help!

  • Malinois can run around 50-65 lbs. But, if it's a cross, they can be anywhere depending on what they were bred with.

  • Looks to me like a whole lot of GS in her.

  • Thanks! I went to a Malinois & multi-breed forum and the general consensus is GS-Husky mix. I didn't realize H girls could be so small. Thanks, all for all the great feedback!

That b/w is a man with attitude ! He'll survive - But talk to Steve Gonto - a great benefactor to our breed. I was delighted to meet him on a visit to our shores many years ago now.

My first B started challenging at 16 months, we neutered him shortly after and it did seem to help a little. However it was only a small part of the solution not the whole solution. The closest thing to a magic solution is the excercise and mental stimulation. Basenjis are one of the most intelligent dogs and need more excercise and stimulation than most. I have generally found males to be much easier to work with and less aggressive than females. Correct discipline, structure, positive reinforcement, patience / stubbornness and enough excercise are the keys. Usually when people have problems with their dogs it is the humans which are the cause, not the dogs.

Welcome to the Forum! The pictures are very good close ups and show off the mirrors to the B's soul! Hope you get as much out of the forum as I did AFTER I adopted my first. Even as my second time around, I love hearing and learning more about how Basenjis rule! Sorry for your loss, but blessing to you and hugs to Star!

@Rafismom: Thanks to the amazing Cheryl-Hanks mom and Kevin and Dr. Gonto we are on our way to trying everything known on Fanconi. All your posts meant the world to me! Rafi is not going to have an easy road-we caught it very late. Gabrielle That is great, hopefully you have also advised his breeder… good luck and well wishes for a good treatment and good results.

Norm, My b will chew almost anything allowed he has gotten better i've had him for 2 yrs he's 3 yrs the shoes are no longer allowed in the house they go in the hallway otherwise they are his lol any remotes, phones, and anything else that has any value that i need i always put up high so he can't reach it Mine is addicted to bottles if he see's a empty bottle anywhere he doesnt stop till he gets it and can put his little love bite in it lol If he see's a full bottle he leaves it but not a empty one anyways all i would say is just put things where he can't touch them that pretty much the only thing i have figured out that will work with his little addutude and the bolting i got phoenix to wait for a treat before he thinks hes going out so he doesnt bolt unless he sees a animal or something outside other then that he just sits and waits for his yummy lol the only bad thing about it is that i always have treats in my pocket lol :D Good luck
