Philadelphia dog show

Basenji Talk

  • Yes, there are lots of "barking" dogs at a dog show….

  • Houston

…and Moses was definitely not one of the most quiet ones in there...no, he had top make himself heard..

That is what I liked about the B that was there, he just sat there and looked at everything and anybody walking by, no noise no nothing...very B-like and poised..

  • @Forever:

We just got back from the show. It was a nice time. There turned out to be 5 bs this morning in the ring, 3 r/w a tri and a trindle. New to this so not sure what went on but I think a r/w took first. So many interesting dogs and everyone was friendly my daughter loved getting to pet all the different dogs. I talked to one of the Basenji owners before we left and she was really nice. She was very helpful and gave me her e-mail address. We will post pics later.

Looks by the results that all 6 entered did show. One was excused for threatening behavior towards the judge. And it must have been so, I have shown to the Judge, Betty Stites many times and she is not afraid of the breed.

  • alot of these are blurry but I picked the best of the Bs.as the day went on hubby got better but unfortunately no more bs. We had borrowed my sons camera for the day.

sorry took so long had to wait for my son to help me out and he was ready to kill me by the time we were finished.

  • There was only 5 in the ring though we did see a brindle later and talked to the owner that b wasnt there at that time

Yes we talked to one of the Bs owners right before we left her name was Laura (Tammen's Basenjis) She helped me out alot talking to me about zoe i'm so glad I met her.

There was a fuss after the showing that delayed the next breed (a whippet owner was very upset about that) we asked laura about it and she mentioned that about the behavior.

  • Forever Amber, I'm glad you had a good time. Showing dogs and going to dog shows can be a lot of fun. My husband and I enjoy it a lot. There are some really great people involved with our breed.

Trust me, you go to enough dog shows and you will see plenty of basenjis NOT being quiet. It is quite entertaining when they all get going together. :D

Well that is true..this little guy just sat there, and I guess since Otis doesn't say a peep in the baroo and yodel department..I took for granted that all B's are quiet, silly me.

  • I was watching (I think) Westminster on TV a few years ago…Basenji was a pretty little bitch and when she entered the ring, she yodeled. Made the judge smile and the commentator made mention of it. I don't remember how she placed, but she was called out for the short list, where they call out four or five dogs to take a second look. I don't know what the technical term is.

Hey, forgot to tell y'all...last year, AJ made it to Westminster....Massachusettes! (the town) :D

The five in the ring would have been the 3 Specials enteres (finished champions) and Winners Dog and Winners Bitch. The one that was excused would have been in the regular dog classes

Laura is very nice, has very nice Basenjis and is a good breeder….

That was amazing…he was a gorgeous boy. I'm watching the breed selection video now and all those dogs are beautiful! Of all the B's in the breed video, number 9 (little girl) a tri beauty who stopped to scratch an itch during judging, number 16 (little girl) a black and white, and number 18 (little boy) a red and white are my favorites. They were all beautiful, but those really stuck in my mind. What I found so amusing is that number 9 the one that scratched her itch was the best of breed for our little angels. She did a wonderful job and showed beautifully. She was a great representative of this breed!

Owning a basenji requires a good sense of humor and a large dose of patience and a willingness to do some creative thinking to convince the basenjis what you want is really the same thing as what they want. So true, never a dull moment with these dogs
