Basenji Training
  • Hello we just got our pup. He is 9 weeks old and was wondering what are the best ways to house train a Basenji pup. We just want to start out the right way with Sancho.

  • It is nice to see you here looking for information.

I would hope that your pup's breeder would have gien you all of this kind of information.
My guess is that your puppy manual [and yes I am serious] did not include anything about house training.
The biggest thing to remember when training them for the house is that they are a DOG, and a puppy at that…. which means that unless you havce no value for anything in your house, you need to crate train him.
You may want to purchase the Basenji Owners Manual through the Evergreen Basenji Club to have something to refer to, in addition to your puppy manual.
    You can find it at:

    Good luck with your pup!

  • I know you know this but outside every little bit and lots of love and time. Welcome and would love to hear more about your pup and pictures. Great being Basenji parents there is lots of fun time ahead. Love his name that's cute.

There is lots of information about house training and crate training… Did you get any information from the breeder? That is really who should have provided you with lots of info.... but if not... you have come to the right place.

Hopefully your pups sire and dam have been DNA tested for Fanconi?

  • Welcome to all of you. So exciting with a new pup..
Look through the puppy threads and also the training threads..lots of info to read..
Where in TX are you, I am in Houston, if you are close, it would be fun to meet up..

I had a similar problem when my last dog was a puppy. She was a rescue, and barely 5 weeks old when I got her, so her ability to hold her urine or bowels was not a very long length of time. As puppies get older they can go longer periods of time between eliminating, but it's important to research (google puppy housetraining) lengths of time for your puppy's age, and work out a schedule for her accordingly. My puppy needed to be brought to the puppy pad and fed every few hours around the clock, and she was initially more work than a newborn baby. As far as the crating goes… puppies are more likely to soil a crate that is too large for them. That doesn't mean you need to run out and get a new one, but rather you can make the used area in her crate smaller. When my puppy was little, I had a soft bag carrier that was small that I placed inside the crate and closed both so she got used to the big crate, but was also just in the smaller carrier bag. You could also use boxes to reduce the size but I would worry about the puppy getting wedged in between the box and the crate, so if you use a box or wood or whatever, make sure it is secure and your puppy can NOT wiggle between it and the crate. Also, accidents will happen with puppies once in a while. They are like human toddlers who have very little control and are learning and gaining strength every day to become more and more house trained, so patience is key. Hope these tips help!

I have had that same situation with Ayo,only with him it's usually with large dogs. we only have one area at the park here, all together, small dogs and big dogs. When he goes in he always chooses one big dog , runs up to him and starts growling. Sometimes he stops very quickly, or the other dog growls back and it stops or it escalates , usually because the other dogs owner freaks out. He is fine around small dogs. And I am pretty sure that he is fine with most dogs, that if I leave them they will work it out, but I'm afraid to let it play out because bigger dogs can really hurt him, and also because usually the other owner freaks and intervenes making everything worse. Sooo, Ayo has started to get a bit of a rep.. The basenji rep!! I usually wait till only small dogs are in…

@agilebasenji: Could you put her in a pen behind the counter? Or section off an area for her. That way she could be with you, socialize, be the store mascot but not be out in the store where she could slip out the door. i dont think that hub will want to change the disposition of things…she'd just learn how to jump over the counter as soon as she figures it out!!!:D
