  • hi all. i finally signed up to the forum after perusing for awhile. i have a basenji, omar who is the love of my life [sorry dave] i am slightly obsessed with his basenji-ness. could you blame me? one of my favorite basenji things happens while on walks. people come up to us and ask if he is a basenji and then tell us their own basenji related history. people get mesmerized by watching him and recalling a basenji from their youth or past. USUALLY a fond memory. of course omar ignores them completely. anyhoo. omar is a celebrity and knows it! i look forward to getting to know the forums and its pack of basenji lovers.

  • Welcome onboard, we're glad to have you and Omar..He is a looker alright. How old is he? I am fairly new myself to the B world, but I have takin' it by the storm, much to my hubby's dissmay..I too, am obsesses with Otis' basenji-ness, where as my husband is annoyed..not me..

  • Awwww, what a cute sleeping Basenji. Aren't they so well behaved that way, asleep:). Welcome to you and your family.

    How did Omar find you?

  • thanks for the welcome. i had been begging to get a dog for YEARS. any dog would do. right before my 40th birthday i told my man i needed a good present, not expensive but meaningful and appropriate to celebrate my aging…like a dog! it worked! after searching high and low at the shelters and countless hours "looking busy" searching petfinder.com at work..we went into a pet store 'just to look'. they let us hold a basenji puppy and it was love at first cuddle. it took another four months to find a breeder. when we went into the yard where the puppies were, with their mother and father, omar came right up to us and sat right in front of us to say "don't even bother looking at the others. it's me. i'm the one. so get me out of this trailer park and back to the big city where i finally take the throne that is my birthright" and so it was....

  • Welcome to the forum. Great little shot of Omar. I used to walk my previous 2 Basenjis by this guy's house and he would be out in front and he'd joke saying "If my wife sees those 2 she'll want another one". She had one but died of old age.

  • Welcome to the forum, Omar looks lovely :)

  • "get me out of this trailer park and back to the big city where i finally take the throne that is my birthright"

OMG, that had me spitting my coffee…(slight pause while I clean the screen and the key board)....You and Omar sound like the perfect couple. [Sorry Dave]:D

  • He is so sweet and welcome. Love your story. Happy Birthday!

  • Hello and welcome to the forum, Omar looks lovely:D

  • Cool story and yes I laughed so very hard, I have to lay down for a minute, side stitches..Ok, I am back..

  • Happy to have you join the forum!

  • Welcome to yet another basenji addict!!

  • Oh man, he's cute. No, wait, "cute" is diminuitive. Sorry, Omar–I meant to say "he's clearly destined for world domination."

  • I definitely cooed the "awww loulou" when I saw that sleeping pic. Trop beau!!

    greetings from Paris!

  • Glad you found us.

  • Welcome. What a splendid birthday gift. Poor Dave, he will be second fiddle for a long time. My husband says he knows he is last in order in my heart, but actually I love him the more as he is not jealous. Indeed, he loves the critters as much as I do.

Omar is a very handsome guy.

  • Welcome to the forum!!!

What a great present to get a Basenji :D:D

  • Welcome to the forum! Omar looks and sounds like a great B! :)

Omar is a very handsome guy.

In 1976 my girl friend at the time got upset one night and threw my tri's bone across the room saying "that dog get's more attention than I do". Years later in 1989 my ex-wife gets upset at me on a camping trip for giving the same tri more attention than her, she says. That tri by the way was way more devoted than either of them.

  • Welcome to you and Omar.

I know what you mean about celebrity status, all the kids in our street know Poppy. I am sure we all are well versed in explaining what a Basenji is!

Thank you so much for the warm welcome words at the Forum! I was very inspirit by my friend Steve, and think about my new puppy basenji. Although I read that basenjii is not for everybody dog, and it may be challenging however I seriously want to find my own Besenjii friend and to give him the name Kovu in honor of my friend's dog. Thanks again for your warm words! Boris

@Rocketdog: Hi all, Lurked around here for a couple of weeks, but now I'm joined and posting because I get the feeling that my newest addition to the family is part-Basenji. He's our third dog, but first possible basenji. Previously we had a border collie/labrador cross while I was growing up, and more recently a purebred Weimaraner who sadly had to be put to sleep in 2005 after suffering brain damage following a very sudden and unexpected series of seizures. Meet Rocky, or 'Rocket' as he's properly known. He was named for his ability to jump vertically and launch himself around the garden in a mad run going after anything that moves. [image: t9678z] [image: t9678z] [image: t9678z] Anyway! We adopted him from the local RSPCA shelter at 9 weeks of age. The shelter took in the pregnant bitch and all the pups were born there, no one ever knew what the father was or even looked like. The mother is black and white, and believed to be some kind of Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross (plausible from the picture they showed us of her, and Rocky seems to have a fairly wide face, afterall). The shelter were at a bit of a loss as to what to describe the puppies as, so they were just called 'terrier crosses'. The rest of the litter were either the same pattern/colouring as Rocky, same pattern in black and white, or mostly brown with black noses and the odd patch of white. We believe he is part Basenji. His colouring seems spot on (right down to the black nose and white-tipped tail), along with those ears (which everyone comments on when we meet people out walking!), his curled tail (which I sadly haven't got a picture of yet), and his voice. Probably shouldn't forget to mention that he is a massive handful, and I've never known such a wilful and downright cheeky dog in all my life :) Wouldn't change him for the world, though, he's a great personality. He is a very vocal boy, he makes the most bizarre noises, it was so weird the first time he sang to us - we never expected a dog to make that kind of sound! It was the singing that prompted me to read up on Basenjis, as I had heard in the past that they are renowned for 'yodelling'. He also does a really funny noise I can only describe as 'grumbling' and I've got him sort-of trained to say 'blah blah blah' back at me, and, if he's in a cheeky mood and being told off, he'll yell 'No!' right back at us :) I've poked around and listened to various sound samples and it's so strange, he does sound like a younger version of the recorded dogs! …and yes, that is a cat's bell on his collar. He loves nothing more than to disappear into the bushes in our garden trying to chase birds and squirrels. The bell scares them off and helps us find him :) So, what do you think? I'd love to hear some opinions from basenji owners who think, from the photos and my description, that he's really got some of that in him. dnjfkgnksghs,f,lkjftgkhfncsmil
