Is Anyone in MO?

Basenji Rescue

  • Hi all,

Is anyone in MO that can go check on this little guy here? I'd be totally willing to adopt him and bring him into the family..just wanted to see if anyone online with the forums is close that can go check him out. I'd prefer opinions from someone who knows the breed!

He's very handsome. I hope I can go get him :-) I'm going to call after the holidays. It'd just be easier if someone was in the area and could go meet him/pass along info.

  • He's gorgeous

    Andrew,
I hope somebody will check him out for you, he is very pretty and coming home with you would make his life so nice..

  • i know there are brat coordinators in MO. You might try contacting someone through them. He is BEAUTIFUL!

  • Andrew - Where is your hometown?
I hope you have sent an email showing interest and will follow up with a phone call.

My youngest Basenji, Bailey, doesn't have dew claws. Why is this done?

Why is what done? Removing dew claws? Most breeders remove dew claws in the US.. if you seach the forum there are a number of threads that address reasons that it has been done for years in the US

I'm in Indianapolis, Indiana. I will definitely call them first thing Monday am.

Good. Don't be discouraged if you get a recorded message…someone will get back to you. Be persistent!! Good luck. Keep us posted, please.

I didn't meet either of my Basenjis before adopting them from www.petfinder.com. Both my girls were hours away from GA; until I picked them up did I know what I was getting. My gut feeling was "that dog needs to live here." (Although, I think that about every abandoned or homeless dog!!) My girls came with lots of baggage, but in a short time things started to work out well. We are still working on little issues, but nothing serious.

Lastnight, I was watching my five dogs playing together in the backyard, and it filled my heart with joy seeing them so happy with each other and their home. My dogs all have unpleasant backgrounds of neglect, abandonment, or horrible abuse.

I called them today and left a detailed message. Hopefully they'll call me back tomorrow.

I'd have to meet him before I adopt him, unfortunately. I have to make sure it's the best match for Shango….

Andrew, Have you heard anything yet? I am dying to know.

Not yet. Left two messages.Keep your fingers crossed.

  • I'm checking in, too.

    Fingers crossed!

  • Maybe we should all check on the dog and have them contact you. Then they'd have to get back to you quick, or get annoyed by all the B lovers.

@Quercus: I wasn't actually referring to dogs that are affected, but indentified as carriers. I was remember a discussion that occurred very early on in the testing, that some carriers may have some 'bleed thru' of the 'guilty' gene, and spill sugar very late in life. And Dr. Johnson wasn't sure if it was due to regular old age kidney changes, or some sort of genetic explanation. It is very possible that that is very old information, and no longer accurate…but it wasn't the case of inaccurate testing at all. Good information about testing carriers monthly, though. I didn't realize that, and I haven't been doing it...guess I need to start again.. I have never heard of anyone talking about "bleed thru" or what that is supposed to me. A dog cannot spill sugar [as in fanconi] without having two mutant genes. Which would then mean that the dog is affected. And to make sure it is understood, the two girls that were actually affected did NOT have inaccurate testing. Nothing happened at the lab or at home. The dogs DNA actually shows that they are carriers. Remember this is the linkage test, and not a direct test. With the recent equipment purchase and plan of some more testing, they wre able to narrow the 'possble' genes down to 1/3 of what they were planning to look at…so hopefully more info is forthcoming soon. It is good to know this girl will be getting a great home! Good luck with her!
