Mean little Brat

  • I am adding a spray bottle on my to-do list for this weekend.

I have a 1 1/2 year old male rescue who came from a home with 2 big dogs. My 6 1/2 year old female is not too happy with his method of play. There have been a couple of fights.

It is getting better but the spray bottle is a GREAT idea!

  • Better buy more than one really nice to have several in different rooms. I think we have about five now just in case.

  • My spray bottle worked wonders. I haven't had to use it in years but even the inadvertent sight of it makes my two behave like angels. My vet even took my advice and uses it in her mobile vet clinic. She says it's the best, cheap investment she ever made.

  • I tried a spray bottle to keep my Riley from trying to chew up his Bulldog older sister and I guess it's the lab in him, he adjusts to the water and after a little while and a few sprays, he couldn't care less

  • We only use a spray bottle for too much 'digging' on the couch, Topper is the only one who occasionally gets overly enthusiastic. If I can't reach the bottle, I make a "phsst" sound, like a spray, and he will stop, turn and look at me. Rarely he will notice that I don't have the bottle and go back to digging, but just the sound of the bottle usually stops the behavior.

Of course, now that he is going deaf, I amy have to buy more bottles again!

  • Oh yes, the spray bottle - a must have for all basenji owners. Use it sparingly and they will learn to run at the sight of it.

  • When the Hart pack is "play fighting very ruff in the yard, they get the hose, so it is geting better, The boys actually stop when they see me go for it. SMART…...

  • Spray bottle has worked with Jaycee but as they say do not use it just because save and use only as neded.

  • The other thing you might want to try is a empty pop can with a couple of rocks, or marbles or pennies. tape the hole and have at hand to throw near to startle. and then ignore the behavior but work on a trick like sit and shake - so the NOISE (distract) comes from above - you don't reinforce (they don't understand that anyway) but you redirect.

    Classic Pavlov

  • I like that going to have to try it out. Just one question will that also work on my son?

    Rita Jean

  • I don't know about sons but I'm sure it doesn't work on Hubby's

My boss asked recently if I'd reached the point where I could leave my dog alone in the apartment outside the crate yet, and I told her that I didn't know if I ever would - he's a chewer and if I'm not there to watch what he's chewing, I don't know if I can trust him. She said "oh, so he can't be trained?" "He is trained, he's just a chewer." "Hmmmm…" was her reply, with a face that said "either you're a bad trainer, or he's a dumb dog." Happier note: took Paco to a dog-friendly restaurant last night, and the bartender yelled "Is that a basenji?!?!" from across the place, ran over to say hi, and went on and on about how her neighbor in the States bred them and how smart they were. :D

Kona has my husband wrapped around her little paw. He started letting her come lay in bed with us on the weekends because she would go back to sleep which meant we could sleep in. Then one night she never made it to her crate - DH says he just forgot ;) Now she has started sleeping with us about every other night because "she is too cute and peaceful looking to move." The funniest part is when we get up she just looks at us like what the heck are you people doing? come back to bed. and then cuddles underneath her blanket. She is too sweet!

Our intent was to only be a foster home for Zeus. All in all, I think things would have improved with time. I talked with his new parents this morning and he is 90 lbs of happy! :D
