Basenji = Little Kid

Basenji Talk
  • I just had it re-assured that basenjis are partly just a 2-3 year old child. My roommates kid is visiting, and his mom is having the same arguments with their 3 year old son as I have with Medjai.

    "You just played, now you MUST go to the bathroom. I know you don't want to, but trust me, you have to."

    "Take a nap, you played all morning, and you always want to play later."

    They both will just look to see when the parent isn't looking and do what they're not supposed to.

  • Difference is the "human" 2/3 yr old grows up… A Basenji...Never!

  • I do think your both right!

    I always tell people that having a Basenji is like having a perpetual 2 yr old….so actually, you give Medjai more credit than I give mine, LOL.

    Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

    My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

    @phoenix3: Looks like a B to me but i think more of a B mix he looks like he has corse hair Maybe be has the size of a cattledog body and a basenji head :) My Aspen is a cattledog/ terrier mix he has the body of a cattledog {the colors} and the height and face of a terrier heres a pic so u can see the colors of the cattledog well one color anyways :D :D phoenix3 - this is Aspen? I'm so amazed at her spots, because my Daisy has spots like Aspens. We know her mother is pure R/W Basenji and she is thought her other half Beagle. One of her other litter mate moms thought Blue Healer (cattledog). But I subscribed to the Beagle. Daisy could be … Cattle Dog I suppose. She's bigger than Duke now at almost 9 months old. I will show her off soon on "Show Off" forum soon.

    :D :D :D Just went though this with EL D – especially the part about snuffling through the dirt pile I was just getting ready to sweep into the garbage. Then there's the "hey wait, don't throw that away, I still want it" part where he drags something disgusting out of the garbage before I can get it out the door. And vacuuming -- ha -- it's "let's play chicken with this beast" (luckily EL D never goes after the cords) and almost knocking stuff over trying not to get hit. :D :D :D

    OMG, TRUST me…its not only ur baby, Jack has some seporation anxiety, i mean, we rescued him so that may be why, but i Always feel so sad when we leave him, he runs to the window and crys when we leave, but i KNOW it wonly lasts until he cant see us anymore (driving away) my neighbor watched for me. but SOMETIMES he does get into things when we leave for too long. like the other day, when he ate my betta fish food...grr...
