Teeth… What age?

Basenji Health Issues & Questions
  • @Benkura:

    Hi Maya

I'm really looking forward to meeting little puppy in the flesh - she looks so like her mummy.

I still have a collection of puppy teeth from my first puppy - he's 7 now!! :o

They should all be out by the time she's ready to go in the show ring but there are always exceptions to the rules.

Well, she's a real fussy, cuddly baby so im sure she'd be more than happy to meet everyone and get LOTS of attention  She has to be the centre of attention at ringcraft, she walked up to someone last night and they dared to ignore her and not give her a fuss  So she got up on their lap  She's a funny little thing!

Sadly, i havent managed to find any of her puppy teeth… Random

  • I remember with my last puppies when I saw a tooth on the rug. I panicked as it was huge I assumed it was an adult canine tooth. So Douglas & I went frantically round all the adult dogs checking their mouths but nothing. Then I thought to check the puppies and right enough it came from Chance - he now has really long adult canines!! They do like to keep us on our toes and frighten us from time to time.

We keep Benji's teeth in an old camera film spool case. :D

  • I' glad I found this post, I was just wondering the same thing about Otis' teeth. Thanks for the info.

  • We have a collection of Milo's baby teeth too! Not sure how many more to come out. His gums were quite sore a couple of weeks ago and he was really unsettled at ringcraft that week. Seems better now though. He's 5 months old now too so that seems about right. It's a shame they can't tell us if their mouth hurts.

  • I have never seen my Basenjis baby teeth once they've changed them. They've probably swallowed them at the time (or else been eaten by the respective mums!!!!!!)
I'm looking forward to seeing this year's crop of puppies in the show ring. It's nice to know that we have several this year. I wish everybody success.

  • I'm glad I happened on this thread as well. I found one puppy tooth from Shaye on the floor, but as of tomorrow she's 5 months, and I've never found another - I guess she swallows them….we have noticed her teeth are looking far more dangerous these days.

  • @Maya:

I was just wondering what age basenji puppy teeth are all out generally?

Maya's front teeth are all through but at ringcraft last night i gave her a little bit of chicken which she was chewing very strangely and i noticed her mouth was bleeding a bit so had a look and one of those big teeth at the back (no idea what they're called :o ) was hanging out  So i gave her a little bone/chew thing and it came out easily enough but now im wondering how many more we have to come  I know with my pug pups their adult teeth are usually through by now!

In our experience the teeth should all be out between 6 and 8 months.

  • Bendji becomes 6 months tomorrow. He lost his last canine a week ago and I managed to collect it ! So now I have 3 puppy teeth in my collection, 2 molars and one canine !:)
IMO it won't be long until Maya will have her permanent teeth:rolleyes:

  • Ripley is just a little over 5 months and I think he only has one baby tooth left. I just found one on my bed yesterday! :)

  • Just to let you all know, Maya lost her last baby tooth about a week or so ago so has a beautiful set of big teeth now :D

  • Puppy teeth are lovely but it is a relief when all the little 'needles' go. :)

    Ain't that the truth! :D:D

@3basenjimom Agree, a vet visit. I have never seen a post on grinding teeth before so it’s very unusual.

Already talked to the vet about this. It was her intention all along. Thank you Pat. Any other suggestions?

@lvoss: The reason for the differing information is because of the differing organizations that do testing. I am not sure about testing in Australia but in the US there are two different organizations that do hip testing, as far as I know only one that does elbows. OFA the organization that does both hips and elbows in the US requires that the dog be at least 24 months old before they will issue a registration number but you can get a preliminary evaluation after 12 months of age. PennHip which I believe is more like the system in Australia, does their hip evaluations as early as, I believe, 4 months old. Actually, OFA will do a preliminary eval as early as four months of age…but you can't get a published preliminary rating until 12 mos; and as you stated no OFA number until 24 mos.

It seems like the lower 1/3 of his K9 (that's his fang I'm guessing!) is gone so we can see the pulp inside. It is not discolored and he's eating fine. I'm glad to hear that he can live without those teeth. I am curious to see what the dentist recommends for the future, since Seti obviously has weak teeth.

@Solomon: I will wait, for a few more weeks, I am going to take him in to have id chip installed and will discuss with my vet. I gues I am just looking forward to have that part of puppy-hood behind us. He is a very normal basenji!!! Thanks for all of the advice! Glenn Certainly you are no different to us.. we are ALL happy when those puppy "needle" teeth finally disappear!:)
