Vacuums = Curious little animals

Basenji Talk
  • :D :D Did he finally get to chomp it to death?

  • @wizard:

:D :D Did he finally get to chomp it to death?

Nope, he doesn't care about it unless it's actually on. lol He'll take a couple stabs at it, then back off till you turn it on again. If I wave it around and stick it at him while it's turned off, he won't do anything. We keep it on the floor in the corner, so it's readily available if he ever wants to take out any stress on it. :)

  • Indy is terrified of the vacuum. I usually pick up all of his things before starting the process but when he was little it was a game. I put stuff in the crate, he takes it out. Finally I would get tired of following him around and just start vacuuming. He would run in terror and hide under the bed.

BUT his toys would still be out there, helpless, going to be eaten by the monster…gasp. So he would sneak to the door of the room I was in gather up all of his courage, wait until the vacuum and I turned our back, dash in and grab one toy. Repeat untill all toys have been rescued and are paying proper hommage to their basenji master. I used to call these his "rescue missions". This happened for about three months.

Now he still hates the vacuum but has figured out that I control it and when I pick his stuff up he should just leave it there. He still runs into another room but no longer cowers under something.

  • LOL I love Indy's rescue missions! None of mine care about toys that much to risk the scary vacuum. :) Now a piece of food might be a different story!

  • Indy was never the most brave. When we took him home as a baby we had three toys for him, a little rope thing, a life sized puppy, and duck (stuffed animal). He would trot endlesly around the house with the two smaller toys in his mouth with his best show prance, occasionally stoping to put it down, wait around for someone to take it and then pick it back up again and bring it over to dh or I as if to say "see its still mine!!!!!". So toys are a prised possession in our house. Especially since they are all his.

  • Both B?s here…. will attack the vacuum...
They aren?t afraid but they going to stand between me andthe vacuum (very easy) and protect me.
If I say " Nee, ga liggen" / No, lie down they'll do it and ignore the vacuum

  • Running the Roomba today, Mejdai followed it about 2 feet behind it, and then made a couple quick dashes to save a couple toys that he hasn't touched in weeks. It's so much more fun now that my horrible roommate moved out and Medjai can run free again. I also took a couple pictures you may be interested in.

My parents got me the artwork while they were on their trip in Egypt. Also where this next photo was taken.

  • Wow, the pic of Medjai is sooo cool!!

  • Great pics, he is a handsome Basenji! The artwork is fascinating, too!!!:D Comparing the two makes it hard to deny the Basenjis roots in Ancient Egypt…

  • and the dog my dad thought might be a relative

  • Yes it could be or maybe Pharoah Hound, either way it is beautifu!:)

  • How neat this is!!!! What a gorgeous B !!!!

  • Yeah, getting Medjai to stay in that pose was a very long 20 minutes. In order for him to look straight, when I'm the only one there, was to open the window. Yeah, that wasn't easy keeping laying down either. He kept wanting to roll on his side and look at me, or get up and go to the window.

  • I actually clicker trained Pharaoh to turn our roomba on. A misguided mistake really

  • Kayah tries to attack it but when it gets close to her she runs away and hides.

My boss asked recently if I'd reached the point where I could leave my dog alone in the apartment outside the crate yet, and I told her that I didn't know if I ever would - he's a chewer and if I'm not there to watch what he's chewing, I don't know if I can trust him. She said "oh, so he can't be trained?" "He is trained, he's just a chewer." "Hmmmm…" was her reply, with a face that said "either you're a bad trainer, or he's a dumb dog." Happier note: took Paco to a dog-friendly restaurant last night, and the bartender yelled "Is that a basenji?!?!" from across the place, ran over to say hi, and went on and on about how her neighbor in the States bred them and how smart they were. :D

When Blaze use to dig, my dad would yell, scream, throw things to no end. It didn't help. Then mom decided to "improve" the landscape. Everyday Blaze would dig a hole, she would go out there, lay some waterproof fabric, pull some larger rocks around it, and put water in it. Blaze would come out the next day to his new favourite hole, and find the water. He'd pace around for a bit, then find a new spot to dig. He did this five times, then he stopped. He hasn't dug since. He's also stopped the couch digging, but we have no claim to that. He was sneaky. He'd unzip the back of the cushion, dig out the back half of the foam, hide his rope toy or stuffed toy in it, then zip it back up. We had some lumpy cushions

Our intent was to only be a foster home for Zeus. All in all, I think things would have improved with time. I talked with his new parents this morning and he is 90 lbs of happy! :D
