No doggy odor

Basenji Talk
  • the best thign about my Basneji mix is the very lack of that doggy smell most dogs have. Granted some are worse than others but still….
I love that i can cuddle as close ot my Spijs as i want and i neither she nor my cloths reek of dog.......its so amazing........She is the only dog ihave ever knows that dosnt just have that "smell" and i LOVE it.
i love that my house doesnt smell like "dog"
does any one else notice that?
I really notice odors alot and most peoepl i knwo tha thave pets have a cetain smell in thier house, you smell it the moment you walk in.
Yet another amazing trait ouf our Basenji pals.... these dogs are amazing!

  • yes, thats a very nice thing about B's!

Some people ask us, how we keep our home so odor-free hahahah

"get some B's" i'll tell them

But also the ammount of losing hair is so little…

Our Ibizian, has a little bit dogs odor (when she'd walk trough the rain) and getter her fur gerplaced at this moment! Wow the ammount of hair i've got!!

But... don't matter how much hair she loosing or how bad she ever smells... we love her anyway! hahaha

  • It definitely is a plus. That's why my B gets to sleep on my bed at night. Other breeds i'm not so sure i'd be willing to do that.

  • There is the corn chip feet smell, though.

Yep, that smell took me a while to figure where it was coming from… I think I first heard it mentioned here on the forums! Until then I just thought it was her body odor or something... LOL:o

  • Corn chip smell is soooo much better than doggy smell, though, IMO. I just don't smell Mag's feet unless I want to smell corn chips!

  • I don't smell my B's feet either, however they think it is pretty amusing to stick them in my face in bed when I am sleeping!!!!!

Thanks everyone for all of the helpful information! We did go and visit someone with a Basenji shorly after I had first posted this question. My son and husband played with the dog and hugged it and it licked them. We stayed for a while. no issues! we are expecting our new Basenji to arrive around the middle of this month. very excited!

I don't keep a collar on Ava unless I'm walking her. Poor Leki's tragic accident is similar to what happened to two Goldens who lived down the street from me. They were in the backyard playing while their owners were away, and the whole block knew immediately that it was awful. This is an old thread, but there's some good info in it. Doggie daycare has been a lifesaver for me. It gives Ava an outlet for her endless energy and is good for socialization. She is a friendly girl who likes everybody– human, canine and feline. I take turns handing her off to everyone there, and so far, she'll go right to them with a hello lick. I want her to know that people are good and she can trust them. Hopefully, it will always be that way!

@TuckerVA: There is a Mexican Hairless in my neighborhood and he's got a -40F coat. It also has a knitted neck that comes up to the ears almost. Not sure what brand/type it is, but I can check if anyone is interested… It just doesn't get that cold here in Va, at least not in the 10 years I've been here. I think it rarely gets below the high teens here. I would be interested in that

My Basenji would never be able to do it. She loves to swim, but isn't that nice with other dogs. My Husky mix would totally love it though. :) We'd have to use a crane to get him back out. I have a "doggy swim day" almost everyday. The shelter I work with built a lake out back, and on the hot days we let all the dogs go play in it.

could be. it also took me a long time to figure out the harness. I'll try again, this time with my hubbies assistance. We want him safe. This weekend my B was doing that sound right before they puke (gave him some rawhide bones) and I carried him to the bathroom and put his head in the toilet thanks to someone else's experience on this forum-sorry forgot who)and my daughter was laughing at me, but hey he threw up in the toilet and hopefully will in the future. I love how human they can be at times….really just like children!
