Does your Basenji go umph?

Basenji Talk
  • Gipper snores louder than should be possible! He makes the funniest noises, too- go watch "Blues Clues" and that's exactly how he sounds, intonation and all!

  • aww man!! does he EVER…lol sometimes i think hes doing it to me...lol maybe im boring...

  • Yup…lots of "umphs" here!

  • Yes, Jazzy is an "umph"er, esp. when being moved against her will.

She also snores loudly enough to be heard in other rooms of the house.

She also "talks" {kind of like a happy growly noise} to us when we return home, but we've never had a yodel.

  • sometimes i have to throw pillows at Jack in the middle of the night bc of his snoring, lol

  • When Lexi yawns, she will sometimes yodel… which sounds like a spanish R being rolled... it's so funny! Otherwise she does her little grunts that sound like you're squishing the air out of her...hahahah.... Miles on the other hand just howls when he's crated (so far). I have video/audio of him doing it but I can't find any website that will host such a big video. Oh well... Maybe I'll get another shorter one sometime.

  • Ours GRRRRRRRRR, BaRRRRooo, bawoof, OOOOOOOUUUUUUU, ZZZZZZZZZZ and of course….ppppsssst.:D Most of the sounds come from the front end.....the last one.......well????

Ours do woof, but it's not a bark at all.

  • Hahaha…Alani also makes a wide variety of noises. As well as the last one mentioned which is really very funny because every time a little toot comes out she acts like she's completely horrified and embarrased. She'll look all around then at us real quick to see if we noticed.

  • aww, jack can really be just cruel in that way, and smells are already a BIG thing with me bc im pregnant so when he gets the stinkies…between him and my hubby i need a gas mask...

  • Stinkies, oh ugh.
Jazzy doesn't have a problem with those anymore. Figured out her trigger was pig's ears. No more porky products for her, no more gas!

  • Funny this topic came up again…just yesterday we were talking about how Chance makes sounds like he is an old man when he breathes. Anytime you move him it sounds like effort on his behalf. Does anyone else hear this too?????

  • Giz Umph's daily. Especially if we are "encouraging" him to get out of our spot on the couch. I get up to go do something and he is like a heat seeking missle, straight for my spot! Sheesh!

  • Hollie umph's too. Sometimes I believe it's that "I'm bored Mom!" umph. And then she will also umph/grunt when you mess with her while she's asleep.

  • I get a sound that sounds so mournful and just like he is saying ohhhhh nooooo it makes me laugh out loud. I get snoring and a little yodel when he is REALLY happy.

  • Yes, my Jojo umphs. It seems like she is either bored and when she feels we "don't get it"…sometimes when she is sleepy I am petting her.

  • @noobie:

I get all kinds of noises outta Noobie…umph....to crying mournfully ...to snoring. But what does a yodel sound like? LOL Maybe admin could give us an audio link? RECORD YOUR YODEL?

I found out what the yodel sounds like, I'm crate training Bindi and she yodels when I'm not in the room or the light is out and she can't see me
it's really cute, but I still feel bad for doing it :( I'm working on it
(she's a little gas maker too LOL)

  • Rocky loves to "umph", "ugh", sigh deeply and dramatically, make noises when he yawns, and yodel like he's from the Alps when we get home. Personally though, I love his "rubble-rubble" the best.

  • I still can't get a baroo out of Chance. Is it odd that I wish he did? Maybee I will eat my words when he starts :)
We get the old man weezies and eerrrs but nothing else except when its crate time. Then its screams for about 15 min. :(

  • Giz will umph and snore and sort of snore snort gruble if we move while he is getting his beauty sleep. He will also "talk" to me now. I have just started to get him to do that, it really sounds like he is trying to say something. :D He also yodels and boofs but he doesn't baroo.

Max also makes those sounds when you move him. If you just ask him to move he grunts looks at me and puts his head back down. He's so funny.

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

Last I heard, the Breed Club secretaries had more people waiting or wanting pups than were available . You could get on a list for a Basenji next winter but I very much doubt you will find one still unsold. Go to the website of the BCGB, or the Northern Basenji Society as you are in the North and you will find email addresses of the secretaries. They will put you in touch with breeders who may be planning a litter for puppies to become ready to leave the nest in about a year's time. Its a long wait I know, but you have most probably missed the boat for now. You are welcome to post me privately. Good luck!

My Rue is pretty perfect. She is mixed with something (I don't know what) so she doesn't look like a real B… and she isn't interested in anything in our house (chewing wise), doesn't bolt out the door, and licks like CRAZY! She also doesn't really like to play with other dogs at the dog park, she just smells them, occasionally chases them, then comes back and lays down by me (EXERCISE DANG IT!). The only normal B behaviors that I see in her are the little noises that she makes (she makes a lot of them for different reasons) and her BAROOOOOOO (which is fitting because we named her Rue before we even knew she was a Basenji) and it seems like she is stubborn about sitting. It's like she is saying, "yeah I know you want me to sit, but first I'm gonna spin around in a circle. Then maybe I'll sit if I feel like it." Haha! She is a character!

She-Ra goes to the door, then looks over her shoulder at us. Problem is, sometimes she's playing a game with us, where she just wants to see if we'll get up and open the door. We're putting a stop to that by putting her out forcibly if she starts to walk away so she knows if we get up to open the door she's going out. Period.
