How much more growth can I expect?

    Gizmo is 5 months today, and is around 10.6Kg.

    Can I expect him to grow more in height/width/length?

    I just bought a nice harness for him, but it is just ever so slightly too big for him.
    It's for a medium breed, and the next size bellow is for small/xsmall breed. I imagine the small breed straps could fit on the max setting, but the design and fitting would most likely be too tight around the chest/legs area.

    This is the measurements/label of the harness. Do you think he will grow into it? I really hope so, it's a great harness.

    Gizmo is a big boy ;) Tillo was 'only' 7 kilo when he was 5 months. He's about 10.5 kg now. He would probably fit your new harness on the smallest size, so there is hope ;)

    Thanks Janneke. Yeah I am very pleased with it. Soft, and sturdy. If he pulls it balances out the pressure to the chest rather than the neck…unlike the other harness I had.

    It's all muscle! lol! It does fit on the smallest setting, but it's still a little bit loose.

    Hmm, so I guess I can expect more growth after 5 months then? Lord, he just might turn out to become 12-13 kg!

    It depends on the breeder. Some finish growing and filling out at two years, some are slower. AJ didn't completely fill out until he was five.

    I'd imagine that Gizmo would keep growing in height if he is only 5 months. Is the last video you posted recent (as of 2 weeks)? It looks like he still has "growth knuckles" so I imagine some additional height is possible. And his body will likely continue to fill out more. His is still really young. But like AJ said, that takes a while for some dogs.

    Hm, I think I will return it today and wait until he is older til I invest in a new harness. Just stick to the neck collar for now.

    My pup Liyah who will be 1 yr on Saturday is still not fully mature. She grew and matured A LOT over the last month - her breeders commented on it when they saw her last weekend, and they had seen her 3 weeks before. Her brothers & sisters are far more mature than she is - the difference has been noticeable since about 5 months.

    Have you seen any of Gizmo's siblings to compare his growth to them. You might get some idea about his growth if you saw some of them.

    As AJ said-depends on the line. But I suspect a lot more filling out. If you want to use the harness, I would keep it. Gizmo may take a few years to fill out totally. Shadow and Sugar didn't fill out until 2-3 and Sugar really looked better after the puppies, so she was around 3 1/2. I don't know if I would want to wait that long to buy another harness.

    I am definitely wondering the same thing about lilu(B mix), she is 3 1/2 months old and she is already 7 kilos….looks like shes gonna be a big gurl!

    The fact that she is a mix, you never will know how much she will grow or how big she will get…. as they say, what you see is what you get...

    It is the owner who needs to make the adjustments necessary to obtain a desired behavior. Sometimes it is hard to figure out the "work around" and, it is incredibly easy for an owner to unintentionally reward an unwanted behavior. You can't be "sloppy" with a basenji - they train us well! I adopted my b-boy about 3 year ago. He wants to decide which direction we walk. Sometimes, that's okay with me, other times it is not. He puts on the brakes and refuses to budge. At first I dragged him a bit. Not good. Treats don't work. Then, I tried giving a quick jerk/release. Not good. (If you try this, please be careful not to cause damage to your dog's neck!) What works for me is I just wait for him to realize I'm not going to give in (this takes A LOT of patience). Sometimes, while I'm waiting for him, I talk to him about why I want to go in a specific direction and tell him what's in it for him... people walking by think I am absolutely bonkers trying to verbally reason with a dog, but it works for us. Sometimes, he completely refuses to budge, so I pick him up and carry him for a bit. Usually, when put him on his feet, he will walk on. I noticed that if I walk to get behind him, he takes a step forward and once he makes that first step, he's more likely to move forward, When he does, I praise him like crazy. Sometimes, especially in dim light, he will stop, stare, hackle and refuse to move forward - at those times, we simply turn around and walk in the other direction because I trust that he sees or smells something that he finds dangerous. One thing I consistently do that might help Woody is I always feed my b when we get home after we walk. That way, he has something to look forward to (i.e., going home is good!) I'm sorry Woody is taking so long to warm up to your brother. Maybe your brother needs to work with Woody on some very simple command like sit, or look at me, giving her high value treats or her dinner when she obeys. That way, she may begin to see him as more of a leader and provider of treats than someone who scares her. It needs to be brief, daily consistent to sink in. Patience. You might have to let your brother be the sole source of all good things (like treats and food) and only if she makes a step toward him. A trainer once advised my neighbor to smear peanut butter on her husband's arm in an attempt to get their new rescue to like her husband better. It didn't work. I'm so glad to hear you see a difference for the good and that you are learning as much as she is. Yay! Please keep us posted on what works. Maybe you can help me with my stubborn b.

    @TikaLynn: I think Basenji's just are very alert dogs, and at night there is a lot of "activity" outside we may not see, but they do! I think that's a big part of it. As they say, "ignorance is bliss". Basenjis are certainly not ignorant when it comes to their surroundings. I noticed Kananga always has his ears back when we're outside at night, or certain times during the day. He can sense something and it makes me nervous at times. :o But this is what makes them great hunters and generally great at surviving out in the open. They are smart, and with that comes anxiety since they are aware.

    @Janneke: :D :D Tillo loves to practise.. favorite trick: Kiss :D And it all has to go in a hurry.. because he doesn't like to stand still and wait.. or the 'wait' has to be a commant :rolleyes: An idea for Buana.. Let him sit and stay.. walk away.. call him to come and while he is comming, tell him to wait. He has to stop walking and sit or lay down. We are training this with Tillo and he's pretty good at it :D Yeahh Kis buana can do also… A very good idea to tell him wait when he already is on his way to me!!!! I'm going to practise!!!:D

    @YodelDogs: If Chance continues his interest in mounting and sniffing Kiya's "female parts", there could be something else going on. It is not unusual for female pups to get puppy vaginitis. This ailment produces aromas that male dogs mistake for being in season. (People can't smell it.) Left untreated, the male dog will aggravate the female so much that fights can occur. I use an ecchinasea/goldenseal capsule daily, opened and mixed with something "smelly" to hide the bitter taste. The problem is always resolved within one week. I am not a veterinarian though so you should discuss this ailment when you take Kiya to your vet. And Robyn is right, this could be the problem also, however in knowing Chance and seeing his behavior with other dogs, I think much of this is that he is just very inmature for his age and never really learn "proper" play with other dogs… he is not aggressive to other dogs, he is just inappropriate with some of his antics.... Kiya, given the chance will put him in his place... but I would think this house is going to get really loud with Basenji sounds...

    Mine have cruddy teeth too… and it could be the hard, hard water... or in the case of OJ it is genetic as all the dogs from his Dam have terrible teeth... and he would always have extractions and so to the point that they just fell out by themselves.... By the way, I tried the oxyfresh... no real help.... And OJ too, after a teeth cleaning, he was like a baby pup again, which told me that his teeth were bothering him....

    When I played the video in my office at home my cat wouldn't stop meowing! Does that mean im going to be looking forward to a basenji singing and a cat as well???!!!!!! :D
