• Hello,

Man these dogs are hard to find! I have been searching for months upon months where I live ( St Pete, FL) and I have yet been able to find one. So, I figured I would post on here to see if anyone has one available.

I am looking for a little black and white female, even a brindle bundle of energy to keep my boyfriends Basenji/Shepard Mix company, as well as myself of course ;). She can be anywhere from a young pup to around 2yrs, I know it's harder to place older dogs and I have no problem opening my heart up to a teenager. Please, if you know anyone or if you yourself has a female that needs a loving home where she would be pampered and brought to the dog park 5x's a week! Contact me with any questions or if you need to find one a home.

    Thank You!

Are you looking for an adult? Or a puppy? If an adult, have you tried BRAT? (www.basenjirescue.org) or if a puppy, you can find find breeders at http://www.basenji.org/PUBLIC/BreederDirectory.htm

If a puppy be sure to go to a responsible breeder that health tests their Basenjis. You can read about the health concerns of our breed at www.basenjihealth.org or at www.basenji.org

If you decide on rescue, please consider DNA testing for Fanconi (you can also read about Fanconi and DNA testing on both the parent club site and the parent club health endowment site)

Thank You for the info! Yes, I do look at BRAT a few times a week to check for any Basenji's in Florida. I am looing for one that is 2yrs old at the most but I prefer younger. I will definately check that breeder directory for some in my area. I also look on Craigslist and petfinder! I'm all over the place trying to find one, haha. I won't lose hope though.

Again, thank you for your help! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Have you filled out a BRAT application? You should go ahead and do that just in case you see one that would suit youโ€ฆ that way you would know if you would be an acceptable (To BRAT) as a potential home.

    Good luck in your search

No, that I have not. I am without a computer at the moment, sadly mine bit the dust. So, I do only use the one that I have available at work which is for "
"work only" but I will find enough time to fill it out. I have looked it over and should hopefully be completing one soon!

  • There is a breeder in Gainsville who does a lot of rescue, I know 2 basenjis from there. Also another breeder, Gale Whitehurst, in south Georgia, who has nice dogs. My friend Ginny got her boy Jack from Gale at about 15 months old, and he is a great dog. (his rump grew taller than his shoulders so he was not going to be in her breeding program and she wanted him to have a good home for about the price of the neuter) She drove down and met us in Gainsville to deliver him half-way. There are a lot of options out there within driving distance.

Oh wow , thank you so much! I have been looking everywhere for a breeder even within 6 hours of me! I haven't had too much luck I did find a few, but they're hard to get ahold of. You've been a big help Anne and thank you again, really. If there is anyway that I could get some of their info from you, if you have access to it and have the time to help. I would be forever grateful.

  • I did respond to you, Jen, though I may be more than 6 hours from you. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I did get your email thanks! Yes, you are alittle far from but hey If it's the dog that I want I will go the distance! Plus, my boyfriend and I have been postponing a trip to Atlanta since September and this wouldn't be too bad of an opportunity to go! Keep me updated on your pups and I am trying to figure out a money situation , ( you know how the economy is righ now haha;) ) and see if we can figure something out for the beginning of January. I do appreciate your prompt response!

  • Brat does work off the applications, sometimes the dogs they have aren't posted on the BRAT list, just moved to the right home.
So, maybe you can go to the library to use their computer to fill out a BRAT ap? That is, if you can't find the dog you want from a responsible breeder.
    Just a thought.

Oh wow really? thats not a bad idea, thank you so much. I will definately try to fill out an application as well and try my luck with BRAT. I would not mind at all getting a rescue dog, not in the least. I'm all about supporting rescue groups and humane societies. Thank you!

  • I can assure you that Robyn's dogs are wonderful! We drove to Atlanta and back (in one day) to get our BRAT girl Nicky when she coordinated our adoption. It's a long day, but well worth it to get a great dog from a wonderful breeder. And gas is just a little over $2 a gallon!

Good luck to you, the right dog will find it's way to you.

Im still trying to get a picture of my boyfriends dog up here, but I can't get email access at my work to post one!
