Basenji Gift Buddies!

Locked Basenji Talk
  • Hey guys, while I was at work at the dog bakery, and lamenting the fact that there aren't more Basenji's in my area, I've come up with an idea. I'd like to know what you all think.

Since we all love our dogs so much, what if we took the opportunity to make new friends for both us, as people and our pups!

What would happen is, whoever is involved, we'll have like a gift exchange! We would organize fun packages with pictures of our B's, some toys, treats, or other fun things that a new friend might enjoy!

I'm volunteering to organize it all. We can decide if we want it monthly, once every two months, every six months….etc. Once we decide that, I'll take everyone involved and assign Basenji Buddies; two people that will chat about what their pups like, what they may want as far as treats, toys...etc as well as exchange mailing addresses.

Let me know if this is something you all would be interested in. I think it'll be fun to meet new friends and who doesn't love getting packages?

  • Sounds fun. If you get enough people be sure to include me & Dallas :)

  • That's a great idea Andrew! I think it can be a lot of fun.

Please email us at admin@basenjiforums.com to discuss and iron out the details.

  • Sounds like fun, and we should definitely include holiday gift exchanges too. Sign me and Scarlett up if you get it going.

  • I would like to join in too! I have to include Chase our Puggle in our package though, Zahra does nothing without him!

    Sign us up.

  • Yeah that would be lots of fun! Sign Tosca and I up :)

  • Don't leave Sahara and I out, we want to play too!

    Sounds like a sales pitch.

  • A good idea but I would like a bit more in the detail department.

It sounds a bit like the ole pen pals sort of thing - would you make an effort to pair up people in different countries or different parts of the US or would you just draw names out of a hat? It might be fun to hook up with people in your area but then it would also be fun to connect with people far away. Or how about a "regular" with a "newbie"? Could we put a monetary limit on the treat exchange (some people might be willing to participate but won't/can't if it involves too much cost)?

  • i agree with wizard about a cap on the amount we spend on treats. I am still in college and everyone knows how broke you are when you are in school. I definitely want to participate but if it gets to expensive or we are sending packages too frequently i won't be able to continue.

  • Jackpot and I would like to be included as well if this goes down. Sounds like fun!

  • Are we going to go ahead and set this up? With HanaRamaQuanMas only a few months away, it will take some time to be able to send a gift to our overseas friends in time.

I see three options: totally random (Admin Alex could pull names to pair us up); random within states; semi-random where those who can't afford to ship overseas could indicate that and they would be paired within their country.

And how about $25 tops on any gift - no more than twice a year.

  • Sounds good! I just replied to the official thread posted by Alex. I think, too, that trying to pair up people within/near their own countries would be good…otherwise to send it overseas might cost more than the gift! So far, in this thread, no one from outside the US responded they wanted to do it anyway, maybe they are thinking the same thing. However, if they want in, hopefully we can work it out so no one is left out!

  • Please post additional comments to the official Basenji Buddy gift exchange thread.

@planetsaver said in Basenji for me or not ?: Will be a problem to leave him alone, let's say 10 days / month an average of 9 hours a day. Also I do not want to have to much trouble with the neighbours, but I understand he can make some noise sometimes, maybe he can be trained to stay alone and not to bark that much. Why would you even think about training a hunting hound to stay home alone ? I would never let my Basenjis alone for more than 4 hours, and even that is very rare. 3 hours is absolute maximum. Like @tanza, I have sold puppies into apartment environments as long as all other boxes ticked positive. Someone there all the time, proper attention to training, not just leaving the dog alone, especially not as a puppy. btw, he won't bark at all. As you would know if you had really researched the breed. He will cry and scream but not bark ! No. At least you are asking questions but I really think you should find another breed.

@melduff I for one think this is FANTASTIC news! You guys are so lucky! You have a one of kind super dog with the papers to prove it. Walks around the neighborhood and trips to the dog park are going to be very much fun... Friendly neighbor: Oh, she's so cute! What kind of dog is she? You: Thanks you so much. Why, she's a Staffy Chow Lab Rott Russell Husky. (Ya haff ta memorize that) :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:  Thanks a bunch for letting us know. Very much enjoyed your thread.

Where I am it costs about $2K+ for a dog from a breeder for just about any breed. Goldens may be less because the litters are so large. That may seem like a lot, but, as Debra mentions, dogs cost money to care for. After vet bills and boarding fees and food, it matters little what the dog cost to acquire. Leaving true puppy mills out of the discussion, given the costs of being a responsible breeder -- testing, vet bills, feeding -- and how much work breeding is, I can't imagine anyone doing it for the money. That leads to two problems for people looking for dogs. One is that since breeding isn't really lucrative, there aren't a ton of breeders, which means the supply of pups is low. Second is that most Basenji breeders want to place their pups in the best possible homes -- remember they aren't doing it for the money -- which means they're looking for people who have had Basenjis before. Something of a Catch-22.

My Basenji Billy is quite undershot; he's a purebred, his bottom jaw just didn't stop growing when it was supposed to. That's okay, I'm a bit of a sucker for a dog with an underbite anyway.:) He was my first rescue Basenji.

I have found that if I take my B to doggie daycare (even if it's only for half a day), she is ehausted when I bring her home. She will let me do the dishes without any basenji help! She also tends to treat our doggie friends a little nicer when they come around. Having a worn out basenji is deifinitely worth the $15!!
